Dual Core and Dual LAN Performance

Performance is the key for smal and medium business users. Synology DS214+ comes with a dual core CPU with built-in floating-point unit, 1GB DDR3 RAM, dual LAN ports, SuperSpeed USB3.0 and the brand new tool-less drive trays, providing incomparable system performance among 2-bay NAS devices available nowadays. The built-in floating-point unit enhances the overall capability of the main CPU to enable higher working efficiency. With RAM twice the size of its predecessor, DS214+ also exhibits a surprising boost in multi-tasking performance. Under link aggregation, DS214+ delivers over 153 MB/s writing speed under RAID 1 configuration in a Windows® environment, and over 208 MB/s reading.1 The dual LAN also supports failover mechanism, ensuring continual network service in case of LAN failure.

Cross Platform File Sharing and Mobile Access

Comprehensive network protocol support assures seamless file sharing across Windows, Mac®, and Linux®platforms. Windows ADS and LDAP integration allows the Synology DS214+ to quickly and easily fit in an existing business network environment with no need to recreate user accounts. Windows ACL support provides much finer-grained access control and efficient privilege settings, allowing users to enjoy native Windows experience.

Internet file access is simplified by the encrypted FTP server and the web-based File Station. HTTPS, the built-in firewall, and IP auto-block support ensure file sharing over the Internet is protected at a high security level. For users who are always on the move, Synology provides a handy app, DS file, for popular mobile devices such as iPhone®, iPad®, Android™ devices and Windows Phone. Anything stored on Synology DS214+ can now be accessed remotely using DS file.

Rich Office Applications

Synology DS214+ runs on the award-winning operating system, Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), which offers comprehensive applications and features designed specifically for office and business workgroups.

Cloud Station allows users to sync files among multiple devices, including Windows PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android tablets or phones, effortlessly keeping everything up-to-date. The Mail Server package turns Synology DS214+ into a dedicated mail service provider, while Mail Station, provides a webmail interface for users to access emails stored on Synology DS214+.

VPN Server package offers an easy VPN solution that turns your Synology DS214+ into a VPN server, providing a secure way of connecting to a private LAN at a remote location. RADIUS Server strengthens network security by overseeing wireless access authentication via RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) networking protocol.

As to environment security, Synology Surveillance Station offers a centralized interface to manage IP cameras deployed in your office or home, allowing users traveling miles away to safeguard the environment by watching live views, recording events, and taking snapshots with a computer or iOS/Android device.

Effective Backup Solutions

Synology DS214+ offers a centralized backup target to consolidate fragmented and unstructured data across a network. PC users can back up their data to Synology DS214+ using Synology Data Replicator software, and Mac OS X® users enjoy native Apple® Time Machine® integration.

A backup wizard is provided for backing up data from DS214+ to another Synology DiskStation or any rsync server via an encrypted connection, or to an external hard drive via USB 3.0 or eSATA connection. The wizard also makes it easy to back up DiskStation data to the cloud via Amazon S3™ or Glacier cloud service. In addition, users can back up and restore DiskStation shared folders in multiple versions using Synology Time Backup package.

Shared Folder Sync allows users to synchronize a specific folder from Synology DS214+ to another DiskStation– a server-to-client backup mechanism that takes place whenever something is changed on the server side. Users will be able to share documents within their local office seamlessly and safely with encrypted connection. When your DiskStation is down, you will be able to have an immediate backup running in no time.

Energy Efficient with Cool and Quiet Design

Synology DS214+ is designed with energy efficiency in mind. Not only does it provide a 92x92 mm fan and the smart airflow to keep the system running cool 24/7, its noise dampening design makes it really quiet compared to PC counterparts. The support of multiple scheduled power on/off and System Hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operation cost.

All Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packing materials. Synology acknowledges the responsibility as a global citizen to continually work to reduce the environmental impact of every product produced.

  • I've only ever used QNAP, how do these compare ?

  • +2

Sounds like a lot of money for a two bay NAS.

Synology and QNAP are pretty comparable in my opinion.

  • Looks like a toaster…

Dual Core CPU Powered by Floating Point Unit

I think what they really meant is Marvell Armada XP as the dual core CPU used here, which includes floating point unit, where many earlier ARM processors don't have. You know, being able to use decimal points will really boost your network and disk access speed.

  • If I was going to spend that much on a 2 bay NAS, I'll spend a bit more on a 5.

  • +2
    • Is there much of an advantage vs DNLA ?

      • I think most love it for the movie sheets

      • +1

Normally. Plex transcodes so that the client machine can display the content regardless of codec restrictions. That's a really key advantage of Plex. However, as this NAS has an ARM server, I don't believe it would transcode. Therefore, no huge advantage over DLNA except for presentation and information.

Thanks for the post. Looking for a NAS deal, but leaning towards 4-bay.

    • and avoid an ARM processor if you want Plex to transcode, which you will if you want to stream local content at all. I don't think the 4 bay ones have ARM processors though.

      • Don't think I really need transcoding to be honest. My Samsung smart TV should be able to handle the decoding natively. If not just get a WDTV/Roku or similar.

        • WDTV will be fine. Others are a 'nope' in general. Definitely not Roku - terrible codec support natively. I haven't hooked up my samsung TV due to previous issues with exactly this issue, but maybe the latest TV's have better codec support, not sure.

        • I have a 2013 Samsung and it plays mkvs fine via USB. I'm hoping it's the same via DLNA.

  • Can anyone suggest the cheapest 5 bay that will work with Plex?

    • +1

A HP microserver of some type maybe. http://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/ProductList.aspx?Sub…

Was recommended to me instead of synology (which I currently use) recently. Open source software is apparently quite good. Expect it would be more fiddly than synology though.

      • +1

Yeah I have a mate who has a Synology (2 bay) and it just works out of the box so that's what I want. cbf fiddling around with Microservers etc

        • Yeah that's what I want. Torrenting, Plex Media Server, more or less out of the box.

        • Higher end synology DS would be great then. Love mine but am continually frustrated by not having Plex transcoding support, as I got a lower end model. Just can't justify an upgrade as my work-arounds work 'ok'.

Take a look through this community-maintained NAS compatibility Google spreadsheet.

      • awesome, cheers!

  • For Synology this seems like a good price though agree with the point that a 4-bay would be more beneficial for professional photography back-up. Would be good for an average house or SMB to back all up.

This calculator on the Synology website is very handy for those who are/arent familiar with RAID: http://www.synology.com/en-global/support/RAID_calculator

  • DickStation, next girl I meet is going to either laugh out loud or get pissed at me. ;)

  • I don't really understand why people bother with Plex, just use XBMC and that will handle any codec you throw at it and there will be no need for transcoding

    • Xmbc = No roku client I think, no smart TV client, much harder to configure, uglier and harder to navigate (even with themes). Really less work. Xmbc is fine though.

  • Get a 4 bay one at least :)
