Dilemma - Samsung GalaxyTrend.... OR.... Moto G

Upcoming birthday pressie for my teenage kid. It wont be used much at all for internet, but will be used for a few apps and alot of music & photos including a handful of goddamn selfies

Narrowed it down to 2 choices…… Samsung galaxy trend which is $170 this weekend at bigW with ozbargain voucher, or a MotoG which will be $219 delivered when the next inevitable 12% off happens at Dick Smith.

Both have 5mp camera with led flash, and both have front 1.3mp camera

Samsung is $50 cheaper than moto g yet and has expanable memory

Moto G is more powerful and is better built yet only has 5gb usable memory (no sd slot)

I would grab the samsung however everywhere i read it is terribly laggy almost for simple tasks which is unacceptable.

Which would you choose? And no a 16gb moto g import is not on the list

I have 8gb motto g dual Sim, it's more than sufficient for normal use. I stream songs but… So 2 GB data for me minimum

The Galaxy Trend would inevitably suffer from unbearably slow performance thanks to Samsung's bloated Touchwiz skin.

The Moto G has much better build quality than the Samsung, much better specs and is running almost stock Android 4.4.2.

Also, Motorola has proven to be very reliable in providing prompt software updates, whereas Samsung loses track of all the low end devices it makes, and almost never updates the software.

The Moto G unfortunately doesn't have a microSD slot, which may make it less attractive for your kid's needs, but it does come with 50GB extra Google Drive storage.

Here are the reviews on the Trend
    http://www.digitalversus.com/mobile-phone/samsung-galaxy-tre…

It looks like a failure of a phone to be honest, Samsung do not make very good low end phones as they all tend to be underpowered. The same goes for a lot of other phone vendors, such as HTC and Sony, who only look to target the higher end market.

At the budget range you're looking at a Motorola G (all around good performance, but lacking expandable storage) or a Huawei (see G526) (very low price with decent specifications).

  • yep seen that review. not sure what he was on about playing HD videos though…… my kids JXD player handled any videos fine.

Really want to get the samsung for the lower price & memory, but its hard to gauge how laggy it is without testing it out myself. What was motorola thinking,…… 8gb (5bg) come on ?!!

Might be worth waiting for the Moto E. Lower specced than the G and doesn't have a front facing camera, but it has microSD support. However Aus release date is TBA and is speculated to retail at sub-$200.

  • Birthdays not coinciding with stuff is an age-old problem.

Consider placing your child in suspended-animation on the night before his birthday, so that when he wakes up you can give him the NEW, upcoming (albeit initially slightly more expensive) Moto-G model - which WILL (thanks to Lenovo's purchase of Motorola's mobile division) have a micro-sd slot!

You may need to start a forum post about 'suspended-animation' tips, first. Is carbonite cheap? Slight risk of death with the process? Some other Ozbargainers will know…

  • went with a Nokia Lumia 625 on sale for $199. Looks like a great phone, although already had my issue trying to upgrade to Windows 8.1
