Found the Deal Somewhere Else? Stop Plagiarising, Do Attribute!

It has brought to my attention recently that some users have been copying and pasting deals that they found on other deal sites and submit them on OzBargain, without attribution. I would like the bargain hunting community here to be aware that plagiarising is wrong — please do not do a plain word-by-word copy 'n' paste. On the other hand, if you do happen to come across deals elsewhere and would like to share them on OzBargain, please attribute your source.

I know many of you also browse other bargain websites — TopBargains that are also based in Sydney, HotUKDeals in the UK, SlickDeals, DealNews, etc in the US. When you spot a good deal there you might want to share with your fellow OzBargainers. Heck. Even Germans copied deals off OzBargain. I think it is perfectly fine to share a deal you found in a forum, on a community sharing site, on a blog, etc. However preferably,

  • You should write your own content. Do not copy and paste what someone else has put in the effort of writing (unless you are quoting that person). Plagiarism is something I tell my primary-school kids what NOT to do, and I'm pretty confident that the professionals here would know better.
  • The main link should go to the merchant. This will help the other OzBargainers to access the deals quicker.
  • You should then attribute your source somewhere in your post, usually either at the very top or at the end of your post. Just add something like "Via Another bargain website" with a link.

Hopefully that's clear.

should mention both op and website

  • Another kind reminder about plagiarism on OzBargain. Over the last couple of months, we have received reports

    • From owners of other forums
    • From reps who posted on other forums
    • From Google where owners of other forums have reported to

That some members of the OzBargain community have copied deals on other websites, word for word. This is not on and we know who you are.

  • I Don't put a source but I like to say thanks to whoever found the deal. I think the biggest site to be ripped off with no credit to founder is slick deals.

    • Rectified thanks, I'm sure OP will remember for next time :)

  • Thanks for the heads up on the other sites… but I barely find enough time in the day to keep current with this one lately!

  • Could one of the mods please clarify referencing a deal from another website. I understand you give credit to the poster, but should there also be a direct link to the deal posted on the other website? Thanks

    • I usually do. I see some are just simply quoting their source without a link — not sure how to link or simply laziness? I don't want to enforce on this but linking your source has always been a good idea.

No worries. Thanks for clarifying. Completely agree with you.

  • This is becoming a common trend these days again, not word-for-word plagiarism, but no direct link to sources or mentions of where the deal was originally found.
