Do we need so many SSD bargains listed?

OK I understand these are the cool thing at the moment and they are pretty cool but computer stuff naturally has a lot of small incremental price reductions. Do we really need a new bargain listed every time an ssd goes down by $3? These always get voted to the front page and offer little value IMO because we've seen it so many times before. Opinions?

  • Generally if the price drop is very small AND someone reports the deal, we unpublish the new deal and update the price in the older deal.

But yes I have no idea what people are doing with all of these SSD drives. Building server farms?

I for one am very grateful for the SSD Deals.

I'd prefer SSDs over DSE 12%

I wouldn't mind the DSE 12% off thing so much if it were all just constrained to one thread. Instead we have the regular 12% off every few days, and then at least half a dozen posts that are from the same coupon (7 for the last one, not including the unpublished ones, and 14 for the one before that). That kind of thing annoys me (and yes, I know it's allowed) on a once off basis, like with Steam sales, let alone every couple of days. DSE is getting a ridiculous amount of coverage.

      • +1 I don't understand why they are not considered a dupe. All 7 of them had the exact same coupon code.

        • It's based on our duplicate rules which were enacted after much community discussion.

          Specifically the duplicate exception:

The original deal is a list of multiple items and the item is not contained in the title of the original deal.

          Dick Smith deals

First deal: Another 12% off at Dick Smith - PS4 + Wolfenstein for $434.02

8 other published product deal posts had no previous mentions in titles.
of those 2 made the front page
2 unpublished deals were duplicates as they were previously posted products
2 were unpublished due to no stock.

Many of us have systems we would like to upgrade and are waiting for particular capacities to reach a low-enough price to buy. Components don't always go through smooth price curves as often a new technology or business realignment or similar will steepen the curve for a while. It is likely SSDs will continue dropping more quickly until a new 'plateau' (well, other way round) is reached in a few months.

I have 3 computers left that I wouldn't mind switching to SSDs soon.

    • Do it, best upgrade you'll ever make ;)

  • I don't mind them. Often the store has a deal that expires and it would save me the trouble of searching for the new store with the best price when i need to buy and if i'm too late for the old deal. KEEP THEM COMING!

  • I guess its fairly similar to all of the Eneloop deals (which really seem to just be announcements that they're back at their usual special).

I find the SSD bargains more useful, as quite often there is a greater saving and usually someone has taken the effort to do currency conversions and find things cheaper than what StaticICE will find from local outlets.

  • OP, if you don't like SSD deals, why don't you post more of other kinds of deals? It's just that I see you've posted only one deal ever, and asking others to also post less just means our community gets weaker, not stronger.

    • Fair comment but I guess I just wait for really awesome deals before I post. I don't agree that posting less makes the community weaker, my point was that noise is making the community weaker. The deals that hit the front page appear very same same to me. Lots of ssds, enelopes, phone apps etc. The one deal I posted was the cheapest I've seen the waeco fridge ever yet hardly got any interest.

Nothing wrong with SSD Deals.. keep em coming!

    • They are awesome but variety is awesome too: )

  • +4

Yeah keep them coming… still waiting on a 1TB SSD for <$200 =P

  • Why do the Amazon prices bounce around so much on these?

  • I always look at em and I'll buy one one day. Only have them in 2 of my 4 computers :'(

There might be less SSD deals if the laptop and desktop manufacturers ship them in standard configuration, as they are one of the best upgrade you can have. I would image many people buy $600 laptops with spinning rust, and then spend another $150 to replace it with an SSD.

  • These always get voted to the front page

    First key word:

    Always

    Second key word:

    Voted

They always get voted to the front page because people like them. Case closed?

  • I like the ssd deals, bought one at the start of the year from one of the deals. Don't really like all the amazon deals that have been posted lately.

  • I might be off topic here. Just a suggestion to the mods.
Consider adding a "I want to buy it" button. This will reflect intention, while the current positive votes continue to reflect opinion.
