What's the dollar value of manufacturer warranty period?

So I've got a shortlist of 3 used dealers' cars I'm going to view. All same compact car model that had 5 years manufacturer warranty. Condition ranging from showroom model with a few km to demonstrator with tens of km to second hand with a few thousand km on the odo. Thus I would be losing between 3 to 12 months of original warranty.

So my question: what dollar value would you put on the warranty period I'm losing compared to a brand new model so that I can factor this into the value for the asking prices.

Thanks in advance.

everyone is guessing even if we had the type of car and the exact PDS

go with what you're comfortable with

Most problems occur in the first couple of years. If something hasn't broken in 4 years, it's not likely to break in the 5th year. If it does it won't be worth much.

Google around, ask a mechanic, what goes wrong with this model? Find out how much those things would cost to fix, factor in whether any of them are likely to go wrong in that 3 to 12 month warranty period, and there's your dollar value.

However, the biggest difference between the cars you're looking at in terms of ultimate cost to you is probably going to be resale value dictated by condition, odo, extras, colour, and year model. Not the warranty (unless you plan to resell within the warranty period).

A car within warranty period mostly means that you can reasonably assume that there's nothing wrong with it that would've come under warranty.

it depends on the type of car

ie. we had 2 Honda CRVs

literally NOTHING went wrong in 6 yrs of ownership

obviously any extended warranty etc is a waste of money

however if I bought 2 VW Tiguan DSG twinchargers… that's a whole different kettle of fish!

  • If you get a good car then you may never need the warranty.
Used cars are always a mystery, you never know what has been done to them or how they have been driven … YOU have to figure them out.
When buying a used car it is a case of the best car in the best condition for the least amount of $.

You would be surprised how many people buy almost new cars and pay near or more than they could have purchased a new one for. Do your research.

  • Like a lot of people nowadays you are over thinking this

  • Thanks for the first few replies. Bought and driving new wheels now.
