Phone for my dad

Bought my old man a huawei y201 as his first foray into smartphones about a year ago. It has served its purpose reasonably well (which included getting him used to touchscreen) but the screen is too small for his eyes and fingers. I'm looking for a cheap Android phone that has a large screen, faster OS (as the Y201 is a bit painful to use). He doesn't use many apps, mainly facebook and AFL, nothing really memory intensive. Sometimes uses it as a hotspot too. Ideally $100-150. Must be outright, and ideally already unlocked or at least able to be unlocked (he's on TPG).

So:
Android
Big Screen
Reasonably fast OS
Minimal app use
$150 ish

Any suggestions?

You are pushing your luck with $150, unless Huawei has a model with a large screen.

I gave my parents a Galaxy Mega (one for each) and they love it. They got into the world of Android smart phones with a S2 and Nexus 3. Gave them my old Note 1 to use for some months to see if they like the bigger screen. And they love the screen size, making it easier for them to see.

Or if you want to take the gamble and know someone who will invite you for a One Plus One.

  • Moto G if you can stretch it to 220ish

  • For a properly big screen (I don't classify MotoG as a big screen), your only option at that price is a ChinaDroid..
Or as shadowarrior says, an older (used) Note or Mega.

  • Ok, looking like I can push to 200ish

I'll check out the Mega and Note.

    Thanks for the replies

    • I don't mind the Windows phones, but trying to teach the old boy a new OS is just too painful. Weaning him off the old nokia flip and on to Android was a difficult experience for all involved (ever tried troubleshooting phone issues while they're on the phone you're trying to troubleshoot?)

    • I have a windows phone but not that particular model and I really like it. It may not be suitable for the op as she indicated her father likes to use the AFL app and there isn't one available on windows phone. I wish the AFL would rectify that soon.
