where to stay in Rome

Hi taking my folks with me to rome in late july, three of us going be there for three nights.

Any good places to stay that not crazy expensive. Budget at the most is $300 a night for a room we can all share.

Only thing we going to do is Vatican, Sistine chapel, pantheon and Colosseum.

Thanks

  • I recommend The Beehive for budget accommodation. I know they do apartments, which is what I thought you might be interested in - although, I've only ever stayed in the dorm in the main hotel. They're friendly, provide their own little guidebook with local recommendations, and the little courtyard garden feels like an oasis in the area near Termini.

  • I remember, a long time ago, staying in a hotel in Rome where the hallway was full of hookers. It was disgusting … none of them spoke English.

    • Would they have been less disgusting if they had been able to speak English? :)

They were probably saying amongst themselves, what a disgusting tourist, doesn't understand Italian. :)

      • Actually in our observations Italians seemed to love hanging out in the hotel corridors and speaking/yelling at each other.

So it might not have been "ladies of the night" at all.

We LOVED Rome, apparently you either do that, or you hate it.

OP do make a chance to get to the Vatican, even if you are not religious. Go at the end of the day as the light pours into the church windows. It's jaw dropping.

  • I second the Beehive. We stayed in an apartment room (shared with others as we were a couple).

Very reasonably priced. Know their city, all good :)

  • 1 place i can recommend is http://www.sleepinitaly.com/rome/navona-pantheon-apartments/…
the place is roughly 20-30 meters walk to the Pantheon and roughly 5 minutes to Fountain de Tevi. Closest metro station was about 10-15 minutes walk which you can catch to the Vatican. i stayed there with the misses and her parents 2 years ago. i know at the time it was cheaper then booking a hotel for all of us, plus it was alot more comfortable. i.e large lounge room and kitchen. They have other places too, this is just the only one i have stayed at in Rome.
i just recently got back from Italy and used the same website to book a place in Florence. The company is easy to deal with and both times i have had no problems. Plus early check in and late check out was not a problem both times. The only small issue is that you pay a deposit when booking and the balance + a security deposit when you get there, this was an issue as when i got the deposit back i was leaving Italy that day so had $200 euro that i had to convert back to AUD or spend in a few hours. Not a big issue just annoying.

  • Oh this was surprisingly interesting as not as creepy as you think. Important to be respectful though.

And you MUST try burrata - you will thank me!

    I am jealous btw :p

  • I second the Crypt of Capuchins.

The Basillica San Clemente was amazing, too - a church built on a church built on a sanctuary. Three levels of history, as you go down below the city.
