Need a new washing machine ~$600

Hey guys,

My fiancee and I need a new washing machine…. and we have no idea what to buy/what not to buy etc.

We've been given a gift card for Harvey Norman, so, that would be the preferred store.

Thoughts? Our budget is probably about $600. I don't know if thats enough for a good washing machine though.

  • My personal MUST HAVE on washing machine -
1 Good size - 7kg - for the occasional wash of blankets.
    2. Front load - save washing powder/liquid. Relatively gentle on garment.
    3. Allow one water inlet for warm/cold wash. Independent of access to hot water.

I like Electrolux. Currently $200 cash back if you are getting a washer + dryer in one transaction.

We have a front loader, and it is anything but gentle on clothes. Even with crease care mode on!

+1 vote for a toploader which is what I will be getting next.

    • i will be getting a top loader next.

i have a 7kg electrolux front-loader and found it frustrating. i always felt that the clothes didn't get washed properly and my towels came out feeling like cardboard. i always used extra rinse so any water savings was offset by the extra rinse cycle.

i also found it frustrating that once you start the wash cycle the door locks and you can't add things that you forgot to put in.

and my main gripe: it is slow! over 2 hours for a wash ffs!

Our Fisher Paykel is at least 14 years old, still going strong. At least 4 full loads of washing a week (thanks to my 3 very messy kids & husband!). It washes pillows, many many kid's stuffed toys, kids' runners, back packs, sleeping bags, even our dog's bedding … the machine just keep going.

  • Check the product review website (some brands have gone downhill since most of us have bought last)

  • another vote for Fisher Paykel

  • Fisher & Paykel is now owned by Haier who presumedly purchased it for its technology.

Their quality standards may be slipping from what I am seeing and no longer will you get 14 years out of 1.

LG have a very good 7.5Kg front loader for around $670 at some shops. HN may match it?

My partner paid a bit more for it but she is in Brisbane and higher prices are to be expected there

  • We bought a Bosch front loader and it's been great.

  • Would recommend http://www.harveynorman.com.au/samsung-720rpm-top-load-8kg-c…

We have an older Samsung top loader which hasnt had any issues. All the wash cycles are finished in an hour or less, it generally uses less power (but more water) than front loaders due to the cycle time and it doesnt have a central agitator which seems to be the thing that wrecks clothes.

Ours has been going 5-6 years now, when it packs it in we will gladly get another one.
