i30 Trophy vs Lancer GSR Sports back

Hi,

Helping the folks buy a new car- have had these two in mind for the last few years and now their old VM is finally on its' last leg.

Happy to get second hand (with low km's and some warranty remaining). Folks most concerned about safety & reliability (sick of huge bills for the VW on repairs)

They keep their cars forever- so longevity is important

New prices:
i30 Trophy – $21,149.00 (Leather, alloys)
Lancer GSR sportsback- $22,880.00 (sports kit)

$23k is the max.

  • Do either of the cars have any known faults (eg transmission issues after x years or something)?

  • Is servicing on either of them cheaper?

  • Any issues with warranty on second hand cars?

  • Should I try convincing them away from bothering with warranty to save the a few thousand? I mean what could the most expensive service be on these types of cars?

People say the Lancer is a less comfy ride, nosier & cheaper feeling. Is that fair?

The reason why the lancer is attractive is as it's a little roomier (i.e. for long trips more boot & passenger space) and it has the 2.4ltr engine (so a bit more powerful). Is that a fair comparison?

  • Out of the two, I prefer the i30. The Lancer is getting a bit long in the tooth and is due for an update - this is quite visible in the interior design. In that price range, I would also look at the Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla and Kia cerato.

  • Lancer is outdated and overpriced. You can buy a base sedan for 16,500. I do not think the sportback is worth 6500 of kit. I would say it is a slightly fair assessment but for bottom dollar nothing beats the Lancer. It is proven reliable and priced like a proton

You should reconsider Mazda 3, Focus or Skoda octavia. Even the corolla

Lancer sedans are super cheap (quoted $15,000 for a brand new 14' manual), but would only go for the hatch. These seem to fetch a big price.

Only reason we're consider it is for it's a bit bigger (for long trips/passenger comfort).

      • Which begs the question is the premium for a hatch and alloy+ kit of 7-8k worth it? Get the sedan and buy a roof rack :)

Just spitballing here, but did you maybe think about test driving both & finding out for yourself…

I'm sure the OP was (has?) intending to do this. However a short test drive cannot compare to living with a vehicle on a day-to-day basis, which is why he is asking for opinions.

Let me guess, your favourite show is The Mentalist

If you can't determine noise & comfort in a car after even a few minutes then you need your head read!!! ;)

      • Yes test drove both. First impression was that the lancer was a little 'tinnier' and noisy. But that was quite some time ago so hoping to go for another one soon.

  • Buy a baseline Lancer, its where the value is, and its superior to the korean hyundai

    • Value is only the case for the Sedan- the Sportsback is pricey (22850 is the cheapest).

      • What i meant to say is buy a current 2Lt. hatch, plenty new ones still around, the 2.4 is a lot of extra coin for not much in return

I suggest you drive them both and decide, regardless the Lancer is still superior, but sure the gap is getting smaller

Mitsubishi are contantly tweaking the Lancer, so its improving all the time with minor updates

No all-new Lancer for at least 2 years or maybe more

    • Lancer is very poorly made, the hyundai has been given best car under $35000 by "Best cars Australia" based on the base model active. So so wrong that you think Mitsubishi is superior. You do not become the no# 1 fastest growing car company worldwide if you do not have a good product.

  • I've just brought the i30 trophy, loving it =)

    • Great! I looked/test drove the i30 & lancer today.

The i30 is a lot nicer inside- it feels like a European luxury car. The lancer is disappointing inside.

However the lancers are cheaper, so we're still undecided.

The lowest we've been able to get the i30 (auto) is $22,000. Carsales shows them at $21,149 but no dealer info. I suspect they're dodgey.
      Has anyone seen/got it cheaper?

You can always get them cheaper, don't go to just one dealership, always be prepared to walk away. Do your homework with how much they are. Go to a dealership and ask them what the best they can do. Walk away and go to another, and get them to beat what you were offered. Remember you can always get the small things thrown in for free, eg floor mats, full tank of fuel, premium plates etc these are often things people don't think about. I have got things like reversing sensors thrown in for free too but check out what the optional extras are and try your luck.

Coming up to end of financial year sales is a fairly good time to purchase as they will be looking to move stock, so they will often do much better deals. Consider 2013 plated cars but my14 so you get the features of this year but they will be looking to clear them as they are 2013 plated. You should be able to get them quite a bit cheaper.

Wow!!!,! You really have no idea

The advice I would give is actually not to listen to this guy danb! Try to respect your sales guy and treat them as someone trying to do there job and maybe work with the person who has test drove you and sold you the features. As for extras, they all cost money. This guy had gross in his car therefore they through the sensors in. No sales department has a storage yard full of accessories. They Pay for them.

Buying a car is very easy, forums make it hard as it is full of ill informed people who have no idea what they are talking about.

        • That is the reason why i would get the car for cheaper and more accessories on than you. The sales people are just that, salesmen. You may get a good one that will work with you if you are prepared to buy on the day but the majority will just try and take advantage of you and push you into a sale you are not prepared for.

My advice was good advice, not sure what you are saying is bad about it. Ive used it to buy quite a few cars for me and my family and have saved thousands.

Nothing personal, but why not? Especially at this time of year dealers are only too happy to throw in accessories, simply for the asking. If you don't ask for them though, there's no way they're going to volunteer it.

Ycon, not dodgy at all - send off an enquiry to the dealer in question and the system will then provide the info on who the dealer is immediately. There are some good savings to be had.
