Job seeking advice

I'm a uni student looking for a job. I already have my resume and cover letter done. I always do my job search on the internet but have not been successful. Can anyone give me advice on getting a job? I sometimes see people actually going to the stores handling out resumes. Is that a good idea?

these days it's all about making yourself stand out. it depends on what type of job you're looking for but certainly if the person/people hiring, know WHO you are then that will increase your chance. let's be honest everyone write hard working and honest on to their resumes. also find out what connections you have.

i got a new job a few months back by making repeated contact with one of the managers

I have a couple of tips..
If you are under 20 and don't have any certificates then I would suggest doing some free govt subsidised courses to get work.
(I don't know the exact ruling in NSW when it comes to govt subsidised courses but I'm pretty sure they're a thing).

I did a Certificate II in Hospitality + first aid/RSG/RSA/RSF and I had 3 jobs within the week of finishing it (Etihad stadium, Flemington Racecourse, Rod Laver Arena, Caulfield Racecourse and more recently, the MCG).

I've also completed my Certificate III in Driving Operations so I could get my MR license paid for for free. As soon as I had completed that they were asking me if they wanted to work for insert a couple of companies driving trucks (they offered it because I did so well in my test but thats another story). and I kindly declined because… i currently have 4 jobs and stuff getting another one.

Also, find jobs that people don't want.. thats my largest bit of advise if you really need work.

Finding retail work is damn hard… And they pay pretty badly.

Also, as horrible as it is, maccas actually pay pretty well and if you can find a good location then its really not a bad job. I've personally never worked there but i've worked in identical situations. Maybe try working in a warehouse as a pick packer?

    • thanks for your input. I find the jobs that people don't want get so much pay! I'm thinking of electrician, plumber, tiler. Do you think I could take leave from uni or see if there's a course outside of my semesters to to study and become one of these, and work as that when I come back to uni? It seems like a good supplement with uni work I think. I'm 21 by the way. Maccas I good, they seem to teach you properly.

I think those jobs will take a while to be trained in, maybe aim for something lower. They also generally hire full time people. You could do what I did and attempt to get jobs at larger venues in bars and what-not. They aren't regular jobs which is why you will generally need more than just that but they do pay quite well ($23-$29 an hour for me).

Thats cool, i forgot to mention even if you are over 20 you can usually do government subsidised courses for free if you dont hold a higher qualification (e.g. if you have a cert III you can't do a cert II but you can do a cert IV.)

But definitely look into other areas outside of retail, even if it involves a course or something its probably worth it because you'd make back the money in no time.

      • Those three jobs are trades, and I'm not sure why you think people don't want to do them? As you noted, they pay reasonably. Unfortunately for your situation to become a tradesperson you need to do an apprenticeship, which is a 4 year training commitment on terrible pay.
If you are interested in building work, you could easily become a labourer and work in construction on weekends/holidays. The pay is also quite reasonable, but the work is hard.
