Samsung Galaxy Tab 10 v IPad Air

Looking for a tablet for the folks and done all the comparisons online etc and seems IPad has the upper hand except for the ability to increase storage from 16.

Any thoughts? I usually prefer android but open to suggestions?

  • Try samsung tab pro 10 inch vs ipad air. The comparison is more valid and I would have picked the tab pro anytime. It's a fairer comparison as they are in the same price category.

  • It depends on your usage. For basic use like email, surfing, games, both are same.
My personal preference will be Galaxy tab because of customisations in Android(iPad feels like playing with robot toy).
For business purposes there are more apps designed for iPad. In that case, iPad is better. iPad do have better battery life and screen, but user experience is childish(personal opinion)

  • Also consider that Samsung's output is micro usb, the Ipad's is via the lightening connector. If you intend streaming to a TV, you can get Allcast on the Samsung for ~A$5.60, I'm unsure what a DNLA app would cost in Apple's store. The lightening MHL for TV out is around $49 US. For cords, OTG and even spare cables the IPad is a lock-in, and comparable accessories [cases, keyboards] for the Apple units are usually 2 -3 times higher even for third party products - think of it like paying for Belkin standards with a Samsung or Sony name…

The 16 gig may sound a lot, but after that you'll be storing in the cloud, the Samsung can take 64 Gig cards. As far as the screen resolution goes, if you are going to be looking at the output on a 50" screen from 120 centimeters away you may notice the pixels in the Samsung and Ipad's output -so cnsccy's advice to look at the Tab Pro is worth considering - you'll also be going from a 1.6GHz dual core atom to a 1.9 quad cortex A16 with a 1.3 GHz quad A7 GPU. The tab does have 3 Gig RAM tho compared with the 2 Gig for the Pro. I'm not sure comparing the 1 Gig RAM for the air is valid, as it's running IOS, not Android. There are some tho who object to having several milliseconds taken out of their day when they could be doing something useful, but none of the units are slouches.

The Ipad can go up to 128 Gig for storage, and the support and quality are high, but unless you're already in the Apple `system', then the Tab 10 is a worhty contender, but for my money, the Tab Pro 10 blows it out of the water.

  • Unless you don't own a laptop and smartphone, a tablet is a luxury item. The galaxy tab feels like plastic, while the iPad feels like it is hewn from a solid piece of metal. Oh that's because the galaxy tab IS a piece of plastic and the iPad IS machined from solid metal. I hate how Apple doesn't let you play around with the OS or add an SD card. But only one of those tablets is a beautiful piece of hardware.

Been using a Sony Xperia z2 tablet for the last few days and absolutely love it!

Having come from an ipad (2 and Mini) it leaves them for dust in terms of portability, and I think the build quality is amazing, considering how thin and light it is, yet does not feel cheap or plastic-y.
Also the added benefit of being on Android does make things so much easier in terms of transferring files onto the device.
Also - it is alot cheaper!

key point here is "the folks"… if they are less tech savvy, I reckon go the iPad.

iPad Air is more user-friendly with your "folks" I reckon, and they probably know more about the iPad than the Samsung ones. Don't bother with technical specs of each device here. If you can afford the iPad go with it your folks will be very happy :)

  • Awesome thanks for the advice, have passed onto Dad and he can go from there. Excellent advice from both sides which is what I was after thanks.
Now onto pricing…. Recon he will go the Android so any advice?

    • Yes, if you go Android, then be a little patient and go second hand. Those Android tablets (Nexus excepted) drop in value real quick; typically they only get an OS update once or twice and quickly become rather unappealing. A benchmark to aim for would be to get one with some warranty coverage at less than 50% of the original price.

Interesting reading comments about the iPad Air being "childish", jailbreak it, better than Andriod junk. You won't get after sales support from Samsung, Apple will give you a top quality support unmatched by Samsung. Apple will give you two years warranty but I think it is only one year with Samsung.m

I transfer files everyday without connecting iTunes, it is all about learning to use it properly.
