Launching website in countries outside Australia

I've just started a website. Because it is new and doesn't have a lot of content, despite my best SEO effots, it doesn't appear in Google SERPs.

I barely receive any hits to the website because of this. Google has such a massive market share in Australia over 94% of search queries, I'm finding it impossible to get the word out about my site.

I'm thinking of trying to customize my content in my website for countries which Google doesn't have a search monopoly, so I can get listed in some other search engines and directories. Is this a good tactic? Has anyone had any success trying to launch overseas?

  • It is interesting that you decided to launch a website in countries where Google is not the dominant search engine. However what's your strategy in bringing in the traffic? Other search engines?

I've launched a few websites over the last dozen years, and a few targeted globally or mostly US-centric. Most of the time you just need to focus on building the product (or the content), and visitors will come sooner or later1.

    1. Your mileage might vary. Often take 12+ months so hang in there!

    • Google is so dominant in Australia that they can basically make or break a business.

      Take this for example:
I have run Ad campaigns on both Bing ads and Google Adwords. I literally used Bing's, copy from Adwords feature to copy the campaign across.

The PPC of a search term on Bing was on average 20% of the cost on Google. For example if I targeted "home for sale" it might cost 20c on Bing but $1.00, because the leading Real Estate portals have massive marketing budgets to throw at Google.

The organic SERPS are heavily weighted towards established domain names. I going to try to find a country that isn't heavily monopolized by one search engine. Fill my website with content targeted at that country, submit it to the major directories and search engines and see if the results are different.

      • To be honest… I personally don't think Adwords works very well, it's almost like flushing money down the toilet.

        • It's used as a tactic by established websites to shut out competition. If the established websites bid up all the keywords related to your website's niche market plus have existing domain authority and backlinks in that niche market, then they fill up both the Ads and the organic search results for that keyword.

New users will never find out about your new website and so it's hard to get anyone just to check it out.

This story perfectly explains what is happening. Established companies like eBay buy up to "100 million or more keywords" to shut out new entrants. And because I'm on a new .estate tLD I don't have enough domain authoirty or backlinks to rank well on the organic search pages.
