Recommendations for new printer.

Parents have old Epson Stylus CX6900F that has just decided to kick the bucket and stop working. Just reports Cryptic error see your documentation and call service if necessary with all lights on when turned on.

Although it was an ok printer. The only thing we didn't like about it was that it refused to print if it reported the cartridge empty. And forced you to replace the cartride to continue printing.

We are looking for a good replacement. Something decent that can print, scan, copy and fax. Preferably with separate ink cartridges. So open to suggestions and any good deals on printers would be appreciated as I haven't looked at printers for a long time so unsure of what would fit my requirements and good these days.

  • Can you live without colour printing, or is that an absolute must?

    • Not worried about colour. Were you thinking of something like a multifunction mono laser printer with fax. They still do color scans.

      • Exactly. There are a line of brother multi function lasers that will definitely keep your consumable costs down lower than an ink jet.

For example; this laster MFC will cost you $159 for the unit at OW. Once you go through the included cartridge, the print economy is $53/1000 pages.

I'm sure a quick Static Ice search will yield a cheaper cartridge solution.

  • Most of the new range of inkjet printers have this "extortion function" which prohibits printing when ink cartridges are low (Brother are the worst…as soon as the ink level approaches low, on any colour…the machines just won't operate.
But before you change your printer, have a look at this article…

I used the "tape method" successfully on my Brother I/J until I just got sick of it and upgraded to a (non Brother, laser).

    • You can do that with inkjets too? Cool! We did it with the laser and got an extra 18 months or so from it.

  • Bear in mind any HP will load down your system with so much zombie and crapware you'll think it was dying :-(

  • What about a colour laser multifunction?

I grabbed a second hand printer off ebay for 99cents a couple of months ago. its a brother printer. easily takes ink refills -4 separate cartridges. it has a3 + a4 trays. scans, prints , copies. downloaded drivers from the brother site. the ink cartridges were full and both the paper trays were both pretty much full as well. just had to run the printer head cleaning process 6 times as it hadn't been used for a while and it's a bloody beauty. 99cents!!!

    second hand. ebay. YMMV

    • You've only started to pay!
