Buy 2 for less price than 1 item

So, I went to my local woolies where they were selling CFL bulbs — 1 (2 pack) for $10.49 and 2 (2 pack) for $10

After I reached home, I saw that I made a mistake in buying the correct type (warm white vs. cool white idiotic silly thing). Being the OCD person I am, I want to return the wrong pack.

Now, how much refund would I be entitled to? $10.49? $5 — something in between?

The bill clearly says the cost of item as $10.49

any ideas…don't want to go to the store and get pushed into a corner saying that you can only return both or none…is that kind of rule enforceable? If they have to pay me money for 1 item, I actually get the other item free and $0.49 to boot ($.99 since i used ING paywave)

Anybody can clarify how this will work out? Or do you want me to go to the shop and tell you what's going to happen?

    Just exchange it.

Yeah they'll just swap the packs and you'll get no refund..

  • When you return it, they will look at the receipt to see what price you paid. If you paid 2 for $10 ($5 per item), if you simply want a return, you will get $5. If you want an exchange and there is no price difference (ie. if the new product is also on the 2-for-10), it will be a simple swap.

If you decide to return it and want to get a different brand item, you will only be able to use a $5 credit, as that's how much you paid for the item.

At least that's what I was trained to do. No way would they give you $10.50 back for one item unless they didn't read the receipt, which they should be doing. They may refund one and it will come as -$10.50, and then scan the new item to balance the till to $0.00. Then that's that.

Either way, I think the ethical thing to do is simply get an exchange and not try to 'beat the system' by trying to return 1 item for full price (thus getting the one you didn't return for free). In my opinion, that is just as bad as taking it right off the shelf and walking out without paying…

  • Say you lost the receipt, and try to get a store credit.
