CC Travel Insurance - BPAY?

Hi all,

I'm looking to book a return flight with Qantas. I don't want to pay the $30 credit card surchage, but I do want to have my trip covered by travel insurance offered with my Bankwest Zero Platinum credit card. I've read through the insurance policy with BankWest and it just says I need to use my card account to pay for the trip. It doesn't say I can't use the "BPAY" facility to pay for it.

I want to be sure that I don't get charged a cash advance fee from Bankwest, so I'm planning to pay the amount on top of my credit limit before initiating a BPAY transfer. My question is whether anybody has used Bankwest to BPAY to Qantas or another BPAY provider which does not accept credit cards, and whether BankWest will charge a cash advance fee (or other fee) if my card is in credit.

Thanks
Ken

maybe try booking same qantas flights via expedia - I think Expedia doesn't charge CC fees (but could be mistaken)

    • Good idea, but it seems that Expedia does pass that on to its customers on the Payment page.

  • I dont think you can BPAY to a provider that doesnt accept Credit Card payments via BPAY?

I've tried it with that card (not qantas) and it said that the provider doesnt accept payments from a credit card.

  • Thanks for your help guys. I called Bankwest to confirm that I could pay with BPAY and get travel insurance if it was from the credit card account, and the answer was 'no.'

I think the wording of the policy here is arguable but for $30 and the risk of no insurance it's not really worth the risk of delay should I need to claim against it.

    • Did they give a reason why it will not be covered?

  • expedia + qwibble for 0.8% cashback… offsets some of the $30

possibly webjet + paypal (with cr card attached), might remove the $30, but will pick up a webjet fee.

  • do some research on their gift cards, used to be possible to purchase it online from qantas, then when you redeem a gift card there's no extra charges and you could pay the balance with a credit card.

    • Thats a great idea. From memory Bankwest Platinum CC travel insurance covered this scenario provided that gift cards were purchased using the CC.
