GPS Car Navigation

Looking back in the forum, it appears many people recommend Tom Tom, over Navman and Garmin.

I am heading up to Queensland (as far as Hervey Bay) from Melbourne at the end of July, with stops in Sydney, Gold Coast and probably other places.

I have never used one of these units before, so am unsure about it.

I figure it will probably be easier than trying to deal with paper maps, and getting round Sydney and Brisbane etc, without local street directories would be almost impossible.

Up till now I have never needed one of these, I rely on my trusty Melway directory and Google Maps to get around Melbourne and Victoria.

I don't want to spend a heap of money on this. So any suggestions for a good workable Tom Tom unit.

Thanks.

You can still use google maps on your phone. And have a free backup offline nav like mapfactor navigator.

If you want to navigate on your smart phone without using internet data then get Sygic.
When installed it will have all the maps for aust in your phone and works just like a regular gps, ie: voice directions, etc..

Tomtom Via 280 5" GPS Unit.

Had a trip to Newcastle from Canberra and this was used by a mate. Convinced to buy one for me but waiting for it to fall below 100$, currently selling around 140 I guess.
