Costco Australia Opening in Melbourne in August

Costco is due to open in Melbourne in mid August 17th, 8am
They must be pretty much set up and ready for sales if its that close.
I was wondering if anyone here had some insider information on what, if any, opening sales we might be able to look forward to?
Perhaps someone has been recently employed there or knows someone working within their stock management who could gives us an sneak peek at what we can expect to see.

I shopped there while I was living in the USA and got some great bargains and I'm looking forward to a similar experience here.
Also curious as to what "new" brands they are planning to release here.

They've also a store planned for Auburn NSW.

Edit: Open date confirmed 17th August, 8am. membership required.

    • I read in that link

The Australian outlets will carry about 3,800 product lines, compared with 27,000 in some Coles outlets…,

I think Aldi carry about 1200 product lines.

  • $60 annual fee is a lot. More items/choices is welcome, of course, but I am not sure whether I can save that much compared with Aldi.

    • You won't save that much compared to aldi, but you will get brand name goods.
They sell quite a lot of stuff in bulk for cheap.

For example when i was in america they had 24 Vitamin Water for $16 usd. ($1 each at walmart)

      • or AU$3.50 each in Australia!

  • +1

I've lived in Adelaide all my life…….and have "followed" the Costco USA brand & site for some years now.

This arose out of my interest & their popularity & practices in the US…..things like - if you don't like an item anymore or want to change it, they would without question. They had to vary this policy slightly, as people would buy a cell phone (say)…and a few months later a new one would be released - shoppers would simply take back their old one & buy a "new model"!!!

I even tried joining from Australia to the US Costco store "club", but they didn't accept international subscriptions……..I've spoken to Patrick Noone - their Oz CEO a few times - nice bloke & Australian……Costco provided the best guessing game since NAB - "would they or would they not, buy another UK Bank?"….that rumor has been around for about 5 years (they already own Clydsedale & have had a capital raising for "further expansion", but I doubt in the UK!!)

Anyway, getting back on track, it was evident from Patrick that they would expand in Oz……gradually….they will even have a store in Adelaide in 2010!! I joined up, as soon as it was available online…..membership starts from the opening of the Melbourne Store in August.

Why join when they're in another State?……..a footy trip to Melbourne every so often, and a quick nip down to Costco & it'll be great. Initially they may not have quite the same range as the US, but go have a look at www.costco.com the US site & see what sort of range of goods & services they offer……it's mind blowing!!!

    Cheers, ozzie

(ps and I have no direct or indirect association in any shape or form with Costco - other than now being a member)

  • Ozzie - I have been a member of Costco before having joined while living in the US. Still go shopping there with friends cards when I travel over to the US. Great they are coming to Oz Aldi is great but different.

This is a very welcome addition to our retailing scene. And maybe it will put a small but significant dent into the Woolies Coles duopoly.

  • Went down and got my photo on the card today. I couldnt see any details in regard to pricing etc but I did notice their Kirkland brand was available. From just beyond the sign up desk I saw a number of large screen LCD/Plasma's and if each TV on display was a different brand/model to the next then there is a decent selection (needed binoculars to read prices) The store is the typical layout you would see overseas. Seasonal goods down the center back of the store and atm its outdoor furniture. Opens 7:45am Mon 17th Aug.
