What is the best site to get information about an iPad I am looking at buying using IMEI number?

Looking at buying a Ipad 2 and buyer is telling me is it 32g wifi and 4G this is from my son to use so want to check it out before I buy a lemon. It is a local advertisement and the buyer has given me the number to check. I can only find on ebay as 3G so not sure their information is correct, and can this be used as a phone with a sim? thanks

  • iPad2 is not 4G.

imei won't tell you much about the iPad as it is related to the cellular radio in the iPad.
imei# can be used to check if it has been blocked (usually as a result of being stolen/lost):
    http://www.amta.org.au/pages/amta/Check.the.Status.of.your.H…

iPad can't be used as a normal phone. It could only be used to make calls using VOIP/skype out, etc

      • An IMEI and an Apple serial number are different things.

An IMEI is 15 digits and be used with the AMTA stolen items register, but not the Apple warranty page.

A serial number can be used on the Apple warranty page and is usually 11 letters and numbers. It won't work with the ATMA stolen devices register.

        • You are right to some extent. but in this instance you can put your device IMEI instead of serial number on the link page to get your device details.

    • Try this website to check IMEI info. They charge 70c USD.

    • I think you are correct but I am not certain. We have had an iPad2 64GB but I am unsure actually of the 3G/4G status etc. We have had this item for over 2 years but fairly certain no mention of 4G at that time, if I recall correctly (ps. the unit functions quite well; very pleased with it. It does pick up on our home wifi 4G fine although we don't insert a sim card in the unit itself. Is there a way I can check this status please; 4G or 3G?

iPad 2 just with 3G not 4G. If u want 4G network should be go 3th gen or later model.

In Australia, 4G is supported by 4th gen or later. 3rd gen didn't support Australian 4G band.

lolwat a neg for saying thanks…. kden

  • I think for a while there Apple was advertising them as "4G" until they were told to stop, so they seller might be genuinely confused.

When buying used Apple Devices, it is important to ensure that the previous user has turned off Find My iPad (Settings -> iCloud -> Find My iPad [OFF]).

Please note that there is no way to use the device with this setting still activated after a restore/reset. It needs to be unlocked with the Apple ID used to originally lock it. Not even Apple will remove this for you.

If it is in a reset state (White Screen with "Welcome"), you will need to insert a sim with a data plan, or connect to Wifi and run through the prompts. If the screen after the wifi selection comes up with "This device is locked with an Apple ID", you will need to get the seller to input the ID to unlock the device. Do this before you hand over any money….

There are many people on GumTree advertising used iPhones/iPads that have this setting on. I would presume that the majority of these devices were once "lost/stolen". Interestingly, after the transaction has taken place, the seller disappears and is uncontactable.

We see victims of this scam of this on a daily basis, with customers ringing to enquire whether we can remove the lock.

Unfortunately, there is no local register for lost or stolen iPads. The AMTA check is for mobile phone IMEI's where the device is registered by the Carrier once reported missing. The Apple check is to determine service eligibility.

would you consider an ipad 4? Much faster than the 3 year old ipad 2 and has retina display. I'm willing to sell my ipad 4 32gb with 4G if you're interested. The cheapest I could find on gumtree was $500 just to give you an idea.

    • Rock man presents a good argument, I sold my iPad 2 recently as it had really slowed down due to it's three year old age and very outdated processor.

You could consider a mini with Retina display if you are fixed on getting an iPad.
Also note that the first gen Mini (released over a year after the iPad 2) has the same A5 chip (old!).
