JB HiFi Gift cards

Hi,
I recently returned a laptop to JB HiFi and I have about $1800 in gift cards. theres nothing at JB i need right now, what is the best way to turn them into cash?

I dont want to do Ebay as the fees will make it pointless. I have done gumtree, any other options?

thnaks

Why did they give you gift cards instead of a cash refund?

Apologies if this is a novice question. Just sounds crap to be given gift cards locking you into more purchases from the same store if you returned an item.

Does it depend on the reason for returning it?

    • The unit was faulty but they still only offered to replace or give me gift cards. Spoke with consumer affairs and apparently as long as they try to assist with a repair or gift card then i have to accept that… so here i am with gift cards i dont need.

      • That doesn't sound right. If the product is faulty you are entitled to a cash refund. Why accept gift cards if they're no use to you?

  • gumtree or sell on forums, thats about the only option. people want a substantial discount though when buying gift cards.

    • yeah noticing that. Getting some stupid offers on gumtree that im not even bothering to reply too…

Sell it to someone in JB in the line to pay.

  • Did you pay using cash or gift cards? And do you have the receipt? (Just trying to get a grip on why they're allowed to do it.)

There's always the classifieds forum here.

    • I paid by card so i expected it to be a card return too. Initially I was happy with just an exchange but they had none in stock. I waited about 4 weeks for stock to come in but when it didnt I gave up and asked for a refund.

The fault was apparently considered "minor" as the rubber casing around the monitor was peeling off. I purchased a lenovo Yoga Pro 2 (dont buy this laptop, its crap btw). As I mentioned I rang consumer affairs and they said that as the retailer was wiling to repair or replace they were doing their part so if they offered store credit, that was fine too. So I felt I had no choice but to accept the resolution.

  • Bunnings have to return funds to the EXACT credit card used for the purchase. I wouldn't want Bunnings gift cards.

    • exact card, but could be different accounts ;)

  • Could have taken advantage of the ebay 15% off and sold the gift cards a little above face value to cover selling costs, and someone on ozbarg could have bought them with 15% for discount.

    would have been win-win
