Bandwidth being used even when connection is down

Lately I've been monitoring my bandwidth and I am noticing a lot of irregularities. For example My Bigpond usage meter says I've already used 11GB today. https://i.imgur.com/0nPxnqD.png
This is complete bullshit since I turned off wifi and the only LAN connection is to my computer which I have disabled since I've been using my Vodafone sim for the weekend. I don't even know why it says 7GB used yesterday (21st June) since I didn't have it connected and the other people in my house only have ipads and use it for Facebook mostly.

I will call telstra soon. Currently I am using a couple of tools to see who is on my connection also monitoring speeds and bandwidth. There is no outside connection from neighbours and speeds/bandwidth are much lower than Bingpond's meter.

Anyone else have this problem and are there any fixes?

  • i remember seeing a recent article stating that many modems are vuneralble to some remote attack.

try turning off the modem for a while to see if usage stops.

also, if your router has traffic stats available, check those to see how much is going out your wan interface

    • Would you happen to have a link to the article?

I checked the usage meter again and the 11GB used today has changed to 400MB. Good that it's a lot lower but 400MB is still a lot for something that hasn't even been used.

it is only a possibility that i was tossing at you. you should monitor the usage at your modem.

also if someone is sending you traffic then if might be counting to your upload quota, even though you are not sending anything.

another possibility is a bt client running on your router (many routers have that functionality nowadays)?

  • I'd also make sure no one is on tumblr…I couldn't figure out where our usage was going until I checked to find my daughter was aimlessly scrolling hundreds of tumblr pages (all images & .gifs) per hour!!

Skype also uses bandwidth, even when no one is using it.

    Good luck
