Home insurance and security

Tell me what home insurance is best :)

(I know, need to do legwork, but wondering if there are any shit ideas or great ideas,)

Also, anyone looked at whether it is worthwhile spending money on security systems etc to bring down home insurance premiums? My place is pretty safe and I don't own anything worth stealing, wondering if anyone has done the maths on whether it is worth you while installing security cameras, deadbolts, etc.

TIA (giggle),
MrDixit.

  • It's really going to vary depending on where you live, I guess, so you'll need to check with your insurance company. The difference it made to our premium was the grand sum of $15!!!

Seriously though, if there's any risk at all, do it for your own peace of mind. The money factor is secondary. We were burgled once in the middle of the night, with teenage daughter sleeping in the next room. The freaky thing is he walked into our bedroom and I was half asleep and though I was seeing things and went back to sleep. lol.

I didn't have a decent night's sleep in the 18 months or so after that that we lived there. And just be aware that if you do need to make a claim, they're going to want proof that you actually had the items you're claiming. Take lots of pics.

When we were looking for home insurance a couple of years ago, NRMA was the cheapest by quite a bit and offered the most cover.

  • You can consider a higher excess to lower the premium. I doubled the excess for building insurance recently from $1000 to $2000. Figured I have not made a claim in 25 years and if I did claim the 2k would insignificant when considering the sum insured is 500k. Saves me around $100 a year.
