Any deals to fly from Sydney-Vietnam in Dec and recommendations on airline?

Looking to get a honeymoon present for my girlfriend and i and she's always talking how she wants to go to vietnam. December is the only time when we are both free, i've had a search for past deals but none that aren't expired. It seems that general return flights are around the $1000 mark per adult, any help for finding deals on atm is appreciated otherwise i'll be keeping a lookout on OZB.

Also, any recommendations on airlines is appreciated, my friends have told me to stay away from China Southern and AirAsia.

Cheers.

  • Where do you live in Australia ?

    • Sydney, prefer a return from/to Ho Chi Minh.

      • Only Vietnam airlines fly straight to Ho Chi Minh city. You can buy a Qantas ticket but that will still put you on Vietnam Airline aircraft. If you prefer a direct flight then looking out for VN air deal is the best option.

$1000 mark per adult is fairly cheap, I think Singapore Airline sometimes run deal at around $900 return but you will have to keep an eye out for it and you will have to spend at least 2 -3 hours in the airport.

Cathay normally runs cheap deal too but that provided you will have to go through Hong Kong.

I've been on Thai airways twice but Thailand's airport is dead boring and their price is not that competitive.

If you want to fly Jetstar you will have to fly to either:

SYDNEY - MELBOURNE - SINGAPORE - HO CHI MINH
SYDNEY - AUCKLAND - SINAGPORE - HO CHI MINH

  • AirAsia is fine. Especially after a move into a new terminal for Kuala Lumpur transits. No more bus-depot-style airport. Maybe look into Scoot? You have to transit at Singapore (no trouble there) and the plane might be a bit of a pain, but nothing too unbearable.

  • try scoot and airasia. usually around $600-$700 return.

  • My $0.02…
My wife and I just booked a trip to Vietnam, earlier than you are going, and we looked at all the discount airlines. But we booked with Singapore Airlines; by the time we added all the fees for meals, baggage, seat preference and so on, SA was less than $100 pp, return, extra. We would rather fly with a 'premium' airline than a discount one, and get the FF points, so it was a no brainer.
From Sydney, Scoot becomes an option, which would be more difficult from Melbourne, where I live. And it is not like you are flying 15 hours to the Middle East, so anything difficult will be relatively bearable.

    • Hey mate,

Yeah everyone recommends SA to me. You mean less than $1,000 pp right?

  • try Malaysia can be under $800 return
