MITSUBISHI LANCER 2007 ES Sedan Replacement Car Key

Fellow OzBargainers I need your advise on getting remote car key working.

I bought used car 6 months ago. It is time to change the battery of remote car key. Currently, I am manually opening and closing the door. Unfortunately, car key case has been hard glued by previous owner and I am unable to open the key case to change the battery. I can use hammer to break the case to transfer stuff to new key case but afraid of mess up and key not working at all. Mitubishi dealer cost heaps and would like to avoid it. I live in Beenleigh, Brisbane. Local locksmith quoted $127.50 for duplicating a key WITHOUT unlock/lock remote button. I wouldn't mind spending upto $200 for better option. I have no idea what to do.

Thanks in advance

  • save money, and just manually open and close door.

similar thing is happening with gf's car. Need to manually open the door, but thats ok, save $$$. Once you're used to it, its not even a hassle, just becomes habit.

  • These are seriously easy to change over if you can break it out.
Cases are under $20 on ebay.
Crack it open carefully when the new one arrives.
Have the new case and a new battery ready to go…and a set of tiny screw drivers. (probably 1 screw!)

We've done this heaps of times, mind you it wasn't glued together.

    • +1

      Not QUITE that easy, sorry.

OP, there's a tiny rectangular cube welded/glued into the top corner of the cavity inside the cover. This is the chip. Without transferring it, your car will (just) turn over, but will not run. You'll need to very carefully work this loose. We found a fine pair of bent nosed pliers worked ok for this.

You say you're prepared to spend up to $200. From memory, when we lost a key it cost us $300 at Mitusubishi to have a spare cut, and the whole lot including car and our existing key reset. It might be worthwhile checking what they would charge just for a new key, without resetting etc. It might well fall within your budget, and it's reasonably easy to switch everything over from the old case into the new one.

Feel free to message me if you'd like some pics of what to look for.

      • Hi Geewhizz,

It would be appreciated if you can demonstrate this using some picures to show how not to f**k up the key. Also, thinking of being on safe side by making a duplicate key by paying $127 before I do surgery of the car key. Your thought?

        Thanks mate

        • Will get hubby to dig out the old one when he gets home tonight and will get some pics for you. I don't know about the $127 key - it seems to me if it doesn't have remote it pretty much defeats the purpose of what you're trying to do?

        • I am trying to have back up key by paying $127 just in case if I mess up transferring my key to new case.

  • Was quoted $1000 (kid you not) for a Lexus Smart Card replacement (key that you leave in your wallet and forget about - like this: https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5140/5461162592_8cf7ec7543_z.j…)

Bought from America, programmed it myself for $200…

I didn't have to get the key cut or anything because it's a push button start, touch the door handle to lock/unlock kinda thing but it should only cost you around $30 for cutting the key yourself.

I've done the same with a Honda Euro too - quoted $400 for a key here, bought in America for $100, got it cut for $30 the nice service people at the local dealer programmed this one for free.

Just make sure that the part number FCC/ID is exactly the same as the Australian versions. It's probably best to see if anyone else has done it too as certain keys have different frequencies in America - make sure you do your research well to see if it's compatible.

  • Found your post after googling the same problem for 08 lancer. I lost my only set of keys and had to pay 400 for mobile van to unlock and cut a new key (without remote). I got quotes up to $2400 from locksmiths and dealership wanted me to tow it to them

    1. You can get a blank key shell on ebay or Dealextreme for under $10
My local keycutter in the shopping centre charged me $25 for the cut
This opens the door and fits into the ignition but you will need the transponder chip to bypass the engine immobilizer which Geewhiz mentioned. its the size of a fingernail
