Reasonable Speed USB 3.0 Portable HDD

Looking for a portable HDD USB 3.0 powered with reasonable transfer speeds. 1 TB space or more.
Was going to get this "WD My Passport Ultra 2TB" from amazon (USD$114.26) but I heard transfer speeds are dead slow. http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Ultra-Portable-External-Backu…

The other one I was looking at Silicon Power 1TB from The Good Guys https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/150117
(this one any good?)

  • Its not so much the box itself but the drive that's inside. most 2.5" hdd only can transfer at 50~100mbps if you want a unit that has extremely fast or close to USB3.0 Limit, I recommend you buying something like a Vantec Box and installing a 1TB SSD. you really get what you pay for.

  • +1

The 2.5" laptop drives that go inside "ultra portable" enclosures are never quite as fast as the 3.5" desktop drives. Typically they spin at 5400rpm on the 2.5" and 7200rpm on the 3.5" drives. However, the 2.5" drives are a little more resilient if you plan to carry it around a lot.

    Good brands: Western Digital, Lacie
    So-so brands: Seagate, Maxtor

  • There's some hhds coming up on Sunday.
In regards to speed, I can't help. I got a Toshiba 2tb, and it's fast enough for me, but I haven't done any speed tests

  • Speed, size, or low price… you can only have 2 ;)
