I want to move about 5 bags approx. 100 by 50cm from Brisbane to Melbourne the cheapest way. Any ideas?

Hi,

So I'm a student living in Brisbane but I have had enough and want to move back to live closer to my friends and family living in Melbourne. Its not like I have a lot of stuff like furniture etc. the biggest things I own are my 32 inch TV, computer and bike. If it makes more sense money wise I guess i will just have to sell them because the tv and bike aren't worth much I'd estimate $100 and $200 each respectively. I custom built my computer for about $1,450 including monitor about a month ago so would like to hold onto that if possible. On top of that I have 5 bags measuring approx 100cm by 50cm. So my question is does anyone have ideas about how I can get them to Melbourne the cheapest possible way, I don't care how long it takes.

Thanks in advance :)
Mark.

  • Possibly risky but you could look on ridesharing websites and see if someone will take petrol money in exchange for transporting goods? I know of friends who did it when they roadtripped up to NSW from Melbourne to collect a car engine.

    • Thanks for that I hadn't thought of that! Know of any ride sharing sites?

      • There seem to be a few on Google, but I can't attest to popularity or usefulness.
My friends used Gumtree, and there seems to be a few options out there though as with all things from Scumtree, do your due diligence.

  • +1

If you're coming down to melbourne the cheapest way possible is to fly qantas and just add the extra bags. I moved from Perth to Melbourne this way and I bought over 3 suitcases, a bike in a bike box and a backpack. It does cost extra to fly qantas but extra baggage is like $20-$25 a bag (first is free).
As long as the bag is under 32kg.. if its over 23 you have to pay $20 for overweight luggage on top of the $20-$25 you would have paid to add the luggage.

    • Thanks for your help surprisingly Jetstar you can have up to 40kg of checked baggage (for an extra $45) + 10kgs hand luggage so I should be able to make do with that

      • Oh if you only have that much then yeah thats definitely the best option. When I came over I had over 80kg so qantas was by far the cheapest method lol

      • Also, you can get 40kg of baggage ($42) + 10kgs carry on on tigerair.

  • OP perhaps look into one of the car transfer sites. Vehicles regularly turn up needing to be moved from Brisbane to Melbourne.

  • Hire a car and drive..
Or get a train ticket and catch the train.

    • Not the train, I would not suggest lugging all of that around with you catching the train.

There is very limited room and you have to be really fit.

  • Thanks for your help guys surprisingly Jetstar you can have up to 40kg of checked baggage (for an extra $45) + 10kgs hand luggage so I should be able to make do with that.

  • if you can drive ~20 hours, hire a car thats fits your bags. some companies allow to drop off the care in different location like budget. so you drop it off in Melbourne
