Buying genuine phone cover from eBay

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at buying a cover for my z2 from ebay but I'm a little hesitant. I've found a few sellers listing the SCR10 cover for the z2 for decent prices and I'm concerned whether it's a genuine item or not. The seller lists it as "genuine" or "original" and the pictures listed are of the original product in the box that says "SCR10". I was wondering if I buy it and it turns out to be a fake if eBay will let me return it, I did have a bit of a read of their terms and conditions but still wasn't sure if I could get a refund if it was a fake. Most of them have pictures of the product and original box and I'm wondering if that in itself is enough to get a refund if it's a fake. Are they allowed to post misleading pictures?

Thanks,

pyro

Ebay is pretty good with removing fakes as they don't want them on the site, so getting a refund shouldn't be a problem. As long as you pay via paypal you should be fine. Aliexpress.com on the other hand is full of fakes, so I wouldnt expect a refund from them.

There are heaps of fakes on eBay and based on a previous post here about a fake Rolex, ebay are willing to ignore this even after its been brought to their attention and allow buyers to unknowingly bid on and purchase fake items.

Many of these fakes are probably purchased by re-sellers through sites like aliexpress, judging if an item is legit or not is quite hard as often the listing images will be of the real product and not accurately reflect the item that you receive.

Aliexpress do have an anti-counterfeit policy, which has been actively enforced since their US ipo announcement.

It would appear to be an uphill battle because as soon as all the fake Oakley sunglasses are removed they are re-listed as O brand sunglasses or something similar.

If you have purchased a fake item on eBay you will only get a refund by claiming this through paypal or your credit card company, eBay will tell you to deal with the seller to sort out the issue but otherwise will not get involved.

Paypal will require you to submit some type of evidence that the item is fake from an expert on the subject, so for a suspect fake watch you could get a written opinion from a jeweler.

Credit card policies differ from provider to provider but generally all will have some kind of policy on fake items.

Aliexpress generally offer a money back guarantee that the item you are purchasing is legit, once you have raised a dispute you deal with a case officer that decides the outcome based on both parties response.

Their buyer protection page even goes as far to say that if you do receive fake goods you can get up to 3x the purchase price back.

Its strange that aliexpress tends to have a bad rep yet their buyer protection policies are far more comprehensive than eBay's.

If you want to avoid this situations altogether try only dealing with the larger online retailers with proven customer feedback records and if the price is too cheap walk away.

Just pay by Paypal and file a report if you are not happy with the item once you get it

Unfortunately ebay is not good at removing fake or misleading items, I have plenty of proof to support that.
They are more interested in the $$$

  • Update: Bought a cover from ebay, turned out to be a fake, seller offered a $2 refund, I refused and took it to paypal, they completely refunded me, bought another and just received it today and it's genuine! Thanks for your advice guys :)
