Advice on what mobile plan to get (Z2/Note3/S5)

Hi guys,

Virgin mobile have a promotion where you get an extra 1gb for plans. So there seems to be a few deals at the moment.

====================================================
I'm looking at one of these ones:

Xperia z2: $40 plan + $15 = $55/month for $450 credit and 1.5gb data

Note 3: $40 plan + $15 = $58/month for $450 credit and 1.5gb data

Galaxy s5: $50 plan + $10 = $60/month for $500 credit and 2gb data

=====================================================

The $40 plans do not have unlimited texts but as far as i know unused credit rolls over every month.

At the moment the Note 3 catches my eye despite the Note 4 coming out soonish.

Do you guys have these phones what would you recommend? Pros and Cons would be helpful.

Thanks!

  • Wouldn't it be better to get an Iphone 5S on a plan, then sell it on Ebay.

Use the funds to buy any of the above phone and keep couple hundred in your pocket?

Btw, out of your choices, the Note 3 and S5 would be my pick. If you prefer the bigger screen then can't really go wrong with Note 3.

    • I think the note 3 costs just as much as a 5s. With the Kogan 15% off the note 3 came down to ~$550 for grey stock. In stores it still costs $700/800 depending on retailer.

  • +1

get the Z1 for free on the $40 virgin plan…not really worth the extra $360 over two years for the Z2 in my view.

    • Thanks for the replies.

I did some research though and it seems the z2 is quite the upgrade over the z1?

At the moment I'm leaning towards the note and z2 but still unsure! Compared to other carriers these are the best deals for these newish phones.

      • I agree, Virgin has the best deals for post-paid contracts at the moment.

I would prefer to buy outright and go on Vaya or Telechoice but Virgin's deals for a $40 plan for 2 years including $400 calls + 1.5gb data is pretty decent as it includes a phone worth $450ish (Xperia Z1).

The Z2 isn't that much of an upgrade over the Z1. The cameras are pretty much identical - you can enable 4k recording on the Z1 with a custom ROM upgrade. The screen is all but 0.2" bigger (although it is slightly better quality overall). The CPU is faster but again, not by any discernable quantity. The bigger battery is probably the best upgrade but not really worth the extra $360 over 2 years (especially as after 2 years, both phones will be worth next-to-nothing anyway - think of it like buying a cheaper 2013-model ex-demo car instead of a slightly upgraded but brand-new 2014 model).

        • true. im sure the z3 will be out at the end of the year as well. I havent really looked at the z1 as reviews seem to say that the screen quality is alot better on the z2. The z1 supposedly had a washed out screen with bad viewing angles?

here is a review that makes it seem worth it for the upgrade:
          http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/127396-sony-xperia-z2-vs-son…

        • Only not good viewing angles on the older ones (where all the reviews are at), the newer batches are much better.

  • I have both a Z1 and a Z Ultra, used to rock a Z (can you tell I'm a Sony fanboy?) The Z1 screen looks fine to me, on par with the Z Ultra, which has been lauded for its screen quality. I have briefly played with a Z2 and while its screen is somewhat richer, it is only incrementally better at best.

  • get the $30 plan BYO Phone(I was lucky enough to get the $20 plan with bonus data but it looks like that is gone…)
    https://www.virginmobile.com.au/sim-card/

and then you have 25*24=600 to spend on a phone from the interwebs like a nexus 5 for $400…

or save the cash and buy a Moto G LTE for $210…

    • Where do you get the Moto G LTE for $210? Sure it's not a G without the LTE?

  • I have the Note 3 plan from Virgin, and I love the screen size.

It's only free sms to Virgin numbers.

The data plan is sufficient for my use.

I love watching movies on it.

I'm not going back to small screens.

Battery life is about the whole day.

    Cheers.
