New Zealand - Queries - Rent-a-car & Teleco

We are going to New Zealand for 3 weeks in September and want to hire a car travelling from Queenstown to Auckland (one-way). We are considering Apex Rent-a-car and wanted to know if anyone has had any experiences with them (good or bad)or any other recommendations?

Our other query is using an sms card in our smart-phone. We only want to check our emails and possibly make the occasional call to confirm accommodations so we won't be using it much. (We are taking our Navman GPS for driving.) Any thoughts about which local NZ Telco company would suit us best?

Many thanks.

  • Telecom NZ without question. Vodafone is rubbish by comparison (a parallel of the situation across the 'dutch' I guess).

Telecom NZ offers a prepaid SIM with 500mb of data and some amount of calls (100min?) for $20NZD per month. this also includes 1gb per day free wifi when near a Telecom NZ phone booth. this was bloody useful on my recent trip as we found most hostels didnt actually include free wifi (and there are Telecom NZ phone booths everywhere!)

cant help you on the rental car - we used Hertz and they were great, as they have been everywhere else in the world in which I have used them.

  • We used go rentals twice and were happy with them.
