As of today theres 40 servers, but usually there is 100s [includes modded servers with special perks :P]
Online community is respectful too, donating spare cash & helping each other throughout hr waves :')
Like you said, it was also the same price in the recent Steam sale. It was even cheaper just a few weeks before that (80% off instead of 75% off) so "cheapest it's been for a while" isn't exactly correct.
In regards to the community, I'd say it's hit-or-miss. It really varies. Sometimes you'll meet regulars who you can easily just get along with but there are several individuals who I see all the time being hostile towards others or not cooperating.
Also, just as a warning, Tripwire Interactive have stated that their DLC are never intentionally on sale beyond 50% off so do some research and see if the DLC is appealing to you or not before purchasing because chances are, if you do want the DLC in the future, you'll end up picking up the main KF bundle anyway, which contains the base game, as it's much cheaper for what you get and like most Steam games you won't get a spare copy.
I played a few games several weeks ago and there were some busy servers. If you are lucky you will find a team who help one another rather than just being in it for themselves. Best to purchase the package with all of the DLCs since the separate DLCs aren't getting heavily discounted :(

Me and a few buddies played the hell out of this game a couple years ago, its mad fun if you play with your mates or get some decent online players, from what I remember, the online community was rather good. I barely came across random a-holes who would just troll or abuse you verbally for no reason.
