Based on the description (below), I think it could be the "2011 Tait "Ball Buster" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia" although I'd be happy to be told otherwise.
The Tait Shiraz is actually a mix of 75% Shiraz, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot hence I'm not absolutely sure.

For those who have not ordered through Vinomofo before, using one of the referral links below will get you and the referrer a $25 credit.

From the website:

A $35 Barossa Shiraz from a 5 Red Star producer at Black Market pricing.

What we can tell you:

This is made by a 5 Red Star producer
This winery produces some of this region's most famous and expensive wines. (We’d love to elaborate and boast for the Halliday points they get or their RRPs, but that might make it too easy for all those Wine Detectives out there)
Tt has those typical Barossa notes of rich and luscious dark fruits. Mulberries, black cherries, plush plums, dark chocolate and a spicy finish. It’s super silky with soft oak and tannins that’ll slide right down your throat, which is exactly what you want when we’re knee deep in winter.
Last but certainly not least, the fruit here has been taken from 50-80 year old vines (which explains the concentration) from all of the best plots that this winery uses to make their most premium wines.

This is 70% off a 5 Red Star Barossa Shiraz and I’m sorry but you don’t even need to think about this one.

The Tait retails for around $20, as intended:

So I doubt it could have a RRP of $35

I don't think Tait have access to vines 50-80 yo. And it won't be the Ball Buster at 14.0% alcohol and the varietal mix…
There isn't quite enough info to identify it, but 2011 in Barossa was a very bad (cool, wet) vintage, with few really good wines made, hence the big discount.

There are about 42 "5 red star" Halliday rated producers in the Barossa.

  • Good points from both,Tait did come up based on a search for a 5-star Barossa winery with vines 50-80 years old. Looking at it again, the Ball Buster is indeed too cheap and really a US wine. Any guesses what I could be folks?

    • Not enough to go on, and it's 2011 so no interest from me while 2010 and even 2012 is out there (both excellent years). Expect many more 2011 bargains to come now that the run of 2010s is at an end.

      • I'm not a wine connoisseur but just had a beautiful Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2011 at a similar RRP. In general, a $35 2011 should never be bad, right?

        • It should be better than a $15 2011. :) What I'm saying is that the same wine with a 2010 vintage or 2012 vintage will have the same RRP but much likely to be better. Regardless, glad you enjoyed your wine.

  • Hi OzB's,

What wine did you get in the end?

VM have it listed again for sale…..I'm interested…do share with us all….PLEASE
