How to block (Panasonic) remote control sensor signal on Blu-Ray?

I am very happy with my (all) Panasonic gear; TH-L50ET60A 3D Smart LED television, DMR-XW480 DVD recorder, and my recent purchase of a 3D blu ray player DMP-BDT460.

Problem is all the Panasonic gear uses the same signal; having a wee problem as the (Viera) remotes (especially for the dvd recorder) are turning on/etc. the blu ray player. Have placed a piece of stick it note paper (after someone suggested sticky tape) over the remote control sensor signal on blu ray player but this is having minimal success.

May anyone suggest another solution to the problem (other than turning the unit completely off)? It has been suggested to place the blu ray as far away as possible from the television etc. but this just didn't work. The blu ray does not receive as much use as the dvd recorder does which is why we wish to temporarily block the signal.

Ps. Before anyone rants about the waste of time 3D is on television etc. I can only give our opinions that we are more than a little pleased with the sharp blu ray movies we have watched so far. Our only complaints is finding more 3D blu ray movies … We just watched MIB 3D and Gravity 3D … Excellente!

I have a bunch of Panasonic devices all connected to the same TV and I originally had this problem with my HDD Recorder and Blu-Ray Player. They have a feature where you can set the remote to use different codes so they dont interfere with each other.
On your DVD Recorder, push the Setup button, then go to Others and then change the remote from DVD1 to something else. After this you will have to do another step with the remote, but from memory it guides you through it.

EDIT: These instructions can probably be done on your Blu-Ray player if that's what you'd prefer.

Thank you. I shall look into this; definitely a better option if this can be done to the blu ray player. Shame the yellow stick it note didn't do the trick; remote sensor signal must be rather strong!

Would probably prefer to alter the blu ray signal code if possible as the tv and dvd are both Viera connected, which is actually very handy for us. The seller (eBay seller as apparently the stores do not have this latest 2014 model yet) said the all Panasonic codes are the same and could not be changed.

Decent price, Panasonic actually recommend this model for out needs, and I purchased it on a Sunday when eBay was running 15 or 20% off. Has 4k upscaling whatever that means. I shall check the books first then maybe leave another message for call back from Panasonic if I have any problems doing it.

    • Thank you again.

Through the blu ray settings menu I have managed to change the code to #2 .. actually it gave 10 codes … which makes me wonder why someone could need 10. Case of after selecting #2 on the applicable blu ray menu, holding down the ok and 2 for minimum 5 seconds and then pointing the remote at the unit holding down the ok again … 5 seconds. Seems too easy but it has worked.

TV and DVD player are both Viera linked so didn't wish to upset the way they operate together. When I operate the DVD player now the blu ray appears to wake but turns off almost immediately so it is no longer an interfering presence. Happy as!

that's annoying, I know the Samsung model has one where u can press a button to switch between the two! how about placing aluminium foil?

I know my Samsung tv doesn't work when I placed a small soft toy infront of the telly!

For equipment that doesn't allow menu (or physical switch+menu) code-swapping, you can always buy an infrared-remote extender kit to circumvent the problem.

Carefully placing or shielding the receiver unit so that you can direct a specific remote at it - and then also carefully locating or taping the output unit so that only the intended device will see it - will allow a fix for you.

  • I have the same tv (although 55") as you. It is most likely the hdmi cabling that is turning on everything. You will need to go into the settings of the TV and turn this feature off.

    • See my other reply as I managed to change the blu ray sensor code to #2 (10 codes in there to select!) … happy days … and it was actually very simple (for me) through the blu ray settings menu and remote. Thank you Panasonic for making it so user friendly. Keeping the tv and dvd player same as we are using Viera connect.
