      Don't you mean prunes?

      Helpful info:

*All dates are organic and require zero pesticides. They are also the oldest and first agriculturally cultivated plant.
*They are high in fiber and can help you become regular
*They are a super food "nutrient dense"
*The natural sugars in dates are easily digestible and you are more likely to become a diabetic from eating
      white bread.
*dates last a month stored out and 8 months stored in the fridge

*dried dates are cheaper but do not taste as nice or have as much antioxidants Also The old crystallized sugars are not healthy soaking them them in water before eating helps remove some of the crystallized gunk.

      • Prunes are covered in preservatives and pesticides.

Thanks to the Muslim Month of Ramadan, Dates every year go down in price from $20 a kilo the rest of the year to these prices during the month.

    • +3

At least then we know when to buy them cheap :)

      • +1

Do remember Ramadan follows Lunar Calendar so it moves around about 15-20 days every year.

        • excuse my ignorance, but what's the connection between Muslims and dates? is it because they're a popular food for people from the Middle East?

        • +1

          around 11-12 days per year

    • why is that?

      • +8

most muslims break the fast at sunset by eating dates, not obligatory though..

      • +2

just a tradition plus Medjool is amazing o_O; I buy them out of Ramadan as well once a while

        • +1

True that. I've never tried any of the (many) other varieties - medjool are tasty enough.

    • +3

Wait - shouldn't supply and demand mean that prices go UP then?

      • +3

You are correct, however stores anticipate that they need dates to cater for the Muslim's and order a lot more; thus causing downward pressure on prices.

Over the past few years the chains have really embraced this Ramadan tradition and have fought to be price leaders. This is a tactic to bring in Muslims who generally buy a huge grocery in order to cater for the magrib (sundown) meal.

  • good price, thanks OP

Fantastic. The Mrs. is going to be so chuffed when I tell her we're having Date Night every night!

    • +5

lol - saw that one one twitter the other day "#RamadanProblems - The only month of the year when I have date every nigh"

  • What's the typical expiry on these?

    • +3

1 month left out at room temp, 8 months stored in the fridge.. These are fresh dates and do not last as long as dried dates.

  • Thats a very good price. Normally around 16-20 kg for these

  • all states?

  • +6

    Ramadan sorted

  • +8

the only dates I get are Medjool Dates… :( forever alone lol

    • +1

lol .. cheap dates .. must make you happy then

  • what's special about the mejdool one compared to the normal ones? went to costco the other day, normal dates were like $1/kg but Mejdool were like $12/kg.

    • They are usually sweeter and softer when compared to normal dates, not sure if it is worth the extra money though

      • +4

Normal dates = dried old husks with crystallized sugar .. not very healthy

Mejdool dates = fresh, plump and better for you.

    • Fresh Medjool dates are delicious and dried $1/kg dates are pretty gross.

  • +1

    I love a sticky date

    • +1

      me too!

    • +2

      with yourself? :P

      • +1

with dates, Just keep a box of tissues handy and you should be fine.

  • You should probably mention that this is for NSW.I got super excited earlier and told everyone at work only to find out we don't have this special in VIC.

    • True but we still have deals going on in VIC on Medjol dates in Coles & woolies. They aren't as good but it's still something.

  • My Persian neighbours will be rejoicing

  • Not in Ritchie's IGA, no where I can see in Melbourne, please add state to title

  • Its also on sale at Coles in Victoria. So Victorians don't be too disappointed!

    • +1

Looks to be $22 p/kg at Coles online in Victoria.

      • +1

$12 a kg at my local Cole's (Sydney) for the cardboard boxed ones.. "prices are down!

    • $16 per kg in my local Coles, Hardly a bargain

    • And also $22 p/kg at my local Coles store in Victoria.

  • +2

    Went to Local IGA.
Apology letter stating dates are 2 for $6. unless its my local in Panania.

Has anyone else found some? which store.

    • +1

when somethings too good to be true i guess :(

  • Went to Summer Hill IGA, Apology letter stating it is 2 for $6.
    :(

  • +2

cheapest date I've had in years…

  • Not in North Sydney IGA. Its listed as a special at $3.37 ea :O

  • Ritchies IGA NSW - Pricing error though still reasonable compared to Coles at $12/kg.

    Its 2 for $6.

    • Looks like math was not one of your strongest subjects …

      $12 per kg is better then 2 x 227 g for $6

      • -3

And grammar was not one of yours..

        *than (not then).

Why does almost everyone get this wrong?

        • -1

Obviously you've got plenty of mates who can't tell than from then.

Lol give me more. Keep proving me correct!

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nRM3vfc1FJg/UCbgCVvd1lI/AAAAAAAAA1…

  • any one know is it available in vic, its really good for health in winter.

    • It's on sale at Coles but not IGA. I was going to go to IGA yesterday but didn't after reading comments up higher in this thread.

  • +1

I make my own halva with dates and unhulled black tahini… delish

    • So.. wanna be frands?

  • Sound amazing, do You have a recipe ?

    • +1

Place equal quantities of date and tahini into food processor…add more or less date depending on your preferred sweetness level, whip it up into a paste and done. You can also add cacao, agave, vanilla essence. If you want it spreadable add some sesame/macadamia oil. Cooking is about experimentation.
