Alternatives to Skype to call landlines in selected European countries, preferrably a monthly flatrate

Hello everybody,

I was just wondering whether anybody knows of a cheap alternative to Skype to call European countries (landlines only). I am looking for a provider who offers a monthly flatrate for unlimited calling to countries such as the UK and Germany.
Skype used to offer this as a subscription (like $6.95 AUS to Germany only or the UK only) but now they only offer a rate for 50 countries which I do not need. They have told me that other countries have this available but not Australia (they recognise us by IP). If you are in Germany for example, you can get a flatrate to all European countries for 6.95 Euros a month but of course this is not available to us.

So, please, if anybody knows of an alternative I would be grateful to know. The only one I found was goober.com but I could not find any reviews or experiences with it on the web.

Looking forward to your replies.

Telstra actually have an International Calling Pack.
It comes with unlimited calls to landlines in UK and Germany like you need.
I have been using it for quite a while now, making calls to various parts of the world. Never had a problem and the quality is just like making a local call.
Just depends if you are willing to use them as your normal home phone provider I guess.
For 200GB (speeds are amazing) + unlimited local/national calls + the international calling I am paying around $130/month right now.

Heres the link for the listed countries:

  • If ur with TPG they have a couple of add on packs with there broadband,

$10 amonth Unlimmited Aussie wide and 100 mins I think International, and then they have one with unlimited also..

  • I used voipdiscount.com ages ago and it seems they still offer free minutes to European countries once you buy their credit. But they have now introduced 'for use policy' so you get

max 300 minutes per week of free calls, measured over the last 7 days and per unique IP address

Call quality to landlines was good (better thn Skype in my experience).
Check them out if they suit you.

  • Thank you to all for your suggestions. For me, trying voipdiscount is most appropriate as I do not have a phone line and also do not subscribe to an internet package but rather get internet via uni/employer which is where I would be using the VOIP service.
    Thank you again.
