Apple TV disconnecting and needs restart to get IP address assigned

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. I've been on countless calls with Apple tech support and no one can solve my problem.

Basically my Apple TV will connect to my router, but until i restart it, my other devices can't see it. So every time I turn the Apple TV on, it needs to be then restarted to function. Very frustrating.

Wondering if it's related to my router, a 10 year old BIllion 7401 VGP modem/router?

Any thoughts much appreciated. Literally had ten calls with Apple and such a debacle that they gave me a $150 voucher for the apple store and replaced the apple tv but the problem persists…

Thanks heaps

  • wow not familiar with the product
Are you using DHCP? or Is the address set as static ?

    • I've tried both. 90% of the time DHCP works and an IP address is assigned, but even then it has to be reset to be seen by other computers on the network :(
StatiC IP assigning was the first thing I tried, but doesn't work :(

  • Wow, so apple gave you $150 and a replacement Apple TV because you're using a 10 year old router? Just buy a new router

    • Yeh going to try that. The compensation was more because of the hopeless nature of the customer service. Guy took ownership of my case and basically then went AWOL and wouldn't return any emails or calls. Didn't realise modem/routers were so cheap. My Billion cost $200+ when I first bought it, and these days can get an ADSL2+ modem/router for twenty bucks!
