How do you pack your lunch?

I'm all for healthy eating, i'd love to hear how the Oz Bargain Community packs their food!

I personally purchase disposable plastic food containers from woollies and batch a weeks worth of food (4 containers a day!). Don't like the extra fuss of washing empty containers and it saves space, kinda annoying carrying a bag of food to work though.

How do you pack your food? And where do you buy your containers from?

Cheapy ones from Kmart seem to do a good job for me. The clear ones with the dark blue locks

    • Are they disposable?

Curious if there was a eco-friendly, compostable and biodegradable food container available for the same price, would you consider it?

      • How would they be the same price, if Divitini uses (at least what sounds like) a reusable container? Disposables will always end up costing more.

Have you tried looking into biodegradable containers etc? Curious to hear what the price difference per container or per 100 is between containers that you're currently using vs. ones like these: https://biopak.com.au/products.php?id=0001&purchase=yes&o=t. :)

Do you carry 4 containers each day? What do you store in each of them?

You can invest in a good quality Japanese Bento lunch box. Check ebay or Amazon or wherever. They come with different compartments and pack into one handy box (usually with a cutesy carry bag to boost manliness lol).

Though they tend to be of modest size. I think our portions are generally more massive. They do make bento boxes designed for men though - bigger, not colourful with bunnies and flowers printed on them :)

I hope Senpai likes my bento.

      • LOL

  • If you are disposing of so many containers you must be paying 40c-80c per day just for the boxes. Madness!!!
My whole lunch rarely costs that much.

    • This is exactly why I use reusable plastic containers. Buying disposable containers continuously adds up! For the sake of saving money I am happy to wash my containers everyday. I just wash them out straight after I've eaten my meal or in failing that, as soon as I get home

  • Decor Glass Real Seal - Oily ingredients below and carbs on top…..keeps the plastic cover mainly oil free so that it is easy to wash, the glass base has no issue being washed. As a plus the glass container acts as a great "bowl" with "handles" to the side to take out your hot food :)

I just buy my lunch from a restaurant each day. Saves heaps of money on disposable containers or detergent/water for washing reusable containers.

I eat out of the bin

I hope you wash your hands before you eat!

  • I carry carrots and on Sundays I treat myself to a bread roll. The bread roll comes in a FREE bag from the shop, the carrots don't need any extra packaging, just pop a few in the backpack.

    • Oh, and I always look for a bargain on large bags of carrots. I'm sick and tired of paying up to $1 per kg of carrots in those little 2kg baggies.

I use Pyrex containers with carbs loaded on top of whatever I had leftover. I don't like carrying food to work but sometimes you gotta save money to buy more Eneloops and torches.

  • Lunch is the hardest meal of the day to do well for me… breakfast is simple, microwaved oats, toast or up n go, dinner I have time to cook a million things but lunch I struggle with.

I'm not a fruit eater apart from odd banana, I don't like old sandwiches so my options are limited and you can only eat so many muesli bars… so I buy it out a lot which probably costs me $50 a week…

I'll be working night shift soon so I really need to find something I like preferably tasty, cheap and healthy pretty quickly…

Leftovers are probably my favourite microwaved but I cook for one so can't make big batches that often… any ideas anyone?

Cook for two and take the left overs for 2 small lunches. Cooking for two will be cheaper per serve usually too.

You can get the three-packs of these for around $4.50 when they're on special (currently.) They're a good size, and fairly compact to stack in the cupboard or freezer.

We don't bother trying to halve recipes to cook for 2, and just pack left-overs in those and store in the freezer. Occasionally we'll bake a big lasagne and divide into those. Hubby's lunch if he doesn't want a salad taken care of, along with quick and easy dinners.

  • I just take it with the box which can carry my lunch to the company and put it in the container to keep it good!

  • I carry my lunch in a box and I'm wondering how can you have all kinds of food in a plastic bag?
