iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 - inserting new sim when overseas (Fiji)

Hi,

I desperatly need phone and internet access in Fiji for my wedding in Sept. I plan to buy a vodaphone sim at the airport when I arrive in Fiji and use that..

I recall a couple of years ago I used a travelsim and when I inserted the sim I had to connect to itunes etc to sync before I could use.. This would not be possibly in Fiji as I don't have the time and or computer etc to be able to do this step.. I plan to use the sim in order for my bride to be to skype her very elderly pop on the wedding day and so want an absolute water tight solution..

Can people give me any guidance on whether I can use without the itunes sync? Should I just take my telstra sim over and pay through the teeth for data for this crucial purpose?

Thanks, and very much appreciated!

When I went overseas a few months ago and swapped to a local sim, I didn't need to use iTunes to activate. This was on an iPhone 5 with the latest software.

  • Personally, I would just use your Telstra SIM and pay. If you are prepaid you can buy a 'plus pack' for roaming data, it's less rape-y.

I would then buy/bring a Pocket Wifi (portable hotspot) so if you find Prepaid SIMs are plentiful and cheap in Fiji you can then buy one with as much data as possible and pop it in there (you will have more luck finding a regular sized prepaid SIM, people in these countries generally don't have Micro/Nano so there are usually no/little prepaid options).

If you get your hotspot up and running you can then use a combination of Hotel Wifi + your portable hotspot (which would power 5 devices, enable Facetime Audio/Video, Skype, Maps, FB messaging, Whatsapp, iMessage and browsing), plus you will still be contactable on your Aussie number (no need to constantly having to swap SIM cards on your phone, people can call you in an emergency).

This solution will also provide your friends with data/Wifi as well on the go.

The alternative is to bring a SIM cutter, but then if you can't get a decent Prepaid SIM in Fiji (or someone is trying to call your Aussie number or Fijian number when your other SIM is in - confusion on which one to call) you will be uncontactable.

  • Unless you are 1000% sure you can buy a Nano SIM at the airport from Vodafone when you arrive in Fiji, definitely take a SIM cutter, they cost about $6-7 on eBay. Buy it now and pack it in your hand luggage.

Also don't forget to take a couple of paperclips if you don't have the original thing to pop the SIM tray out.

  • Fiji has cheaper call and internet charges than Australia. Micro, nano-sims are readily available FOC or for minimal prices (FJD5). Mobile data is dirt cheap. Overseas calls are cheap at 15c (FJ) per minute to Australia and many other destinations.

  • Make sure to carry an unlocked phone or pocket wifi though.
