Insurance claim with YOUI

Hi all,

Recently, I reversed my car and bumped into another car parking on the street. It was my fault that I didn't check (too tired after work probably). I haven't had any car accident in 5 yrs.

Since I have comprehensive cover, I collected the other car owner details and submitted the claim to YOUI . The YOUI rep took my claim and said I have to pay $1800 excess that includes $800 standard fee and $1000 extra since the policy age is less than 90 days.

I checked with my brother as I got my car from him. He paid comprehensive cover with YOUI and I also bought my current policy with YOUI before he canceled it. So, basically, only the policy holder changed. The car has been covered with YOUI continuously for more than 3 years.

Not sure what I can do to make YOUI drop the $1000 penalty (less than 90 days) and I wasn't informed about this when I bought the cover via phone (made online quote and got call back from YOUI rep).

So, my great OzBargainers, please enlighten me

Many thanks in advance

  • Call them up and ask to hear the conversation where you agreed to the $1000 penalty.

Have you received your policy book?

This.. Just cause you didn't get told it over the phone is irrelevant. You should have read the PDS when it was (undoubtedly) sent to you.

A new policy holder is a new policy. You have different ages, different address, and thus different ratings, different risk. How long the last owner held a policy over a vehicle with the same insurer is irrelevant. If you get out of the $1000 extra I would be very surprised.

Your policy schedule that you received would clearly state all the excesses that you are liable for - there would have been a cooling off period and if you did not like it, you could have cancelled the policy and taken a different one from someone else.

At $1800 excess, it would probably make more sense to cancel the claim and to pay for the other car owners repairs - should not be much damage if it was a bump while reversing an they might choose to have some money and not repair the car immediately.

Just what I was going to suggest. Just cancel the claim and get the other car fixed without using the insurance.

      • Agreed, $1800 should fix the damage from a minor parking bingle on both cars!

Cancel the claim AND the policy with YOUI & shop around for a decent insurer.

just get out of YOUI…….. too much hassle with them. U provided them a lot of condition of your driving, if you change the patern and never inform them, they can void your insurance policy. not worth the little saving…..

      This ^

In my opinion, YOUI is one of the worst insurers out there. They ask you a million questions to try and establish you're driving patterns.

If you do something out of pattern which we all do, and get in a bingle. They have the right to void your claim!

Unless you do the same thing everyday for the rest of your life, then I guess this is the only situation this will work =S

    Hi Trungtily

It’s true that a special 90 day excess can be applied in some cases, however you should be told about this & agree to it when you purchase the policy. I’m really sorry if this wasn’t the case & I’m keen to look into this further, however I’d need a claim number to be able to do so. Any chance you could email this info to me, my email address is [email protected], or leave details at www.youi.com.au/wall so I can get straight onto it?

    Cheers, Kerry.

  • Hi,

Thanks all for your advices. As mentioned, the car has been insured for years. In my brother's policy, he also listed me as regular driver. Thus, YOUI does have my details in the previous and the current one. The reason we (my brother and I) cancelled the old and bought new one simply due to the fact that I have better driver history (no claim bonus ??) so my one is much cheaper. Otherwise, we didn't bother, I could pay him directly to take over the old one. In addition, he was also charged $30 fee for cancellation.

When I found out about this, I feel I have been fooled since I paid for 12 month cover, not 9 months. It doesn't make sense. No one wants accidents.
On the other hand, YOUI may think that people have been trying to take advantages by creating accidents on purpose (new car replacement at low cost ? ) so it has this "tricky" policy (90 days). I wouldn't go with YOUI if I were aware of this.

I got a call back for the YOUI rep said that they are checking and will let me know the result regards to the $1000 extra. I also told the rep that if YOUI doesn't want to drop it, I would cancel the claim as well as my cover. I will settle directly with the other driver. I got a few quotes for less than $1200 in total.

Hi Trungtily, thanks so much for emailing the claim number to me so I could look into this further for you. As discussed this morning the additional excess was applied in error & has been waived. I’m really sorry for the mix up & we’ll follow up with your claims advisor for coaching purposes. Cheers, Kerry.

Wow. This is a win for OzBargain :) :) :) The OP got his additional excess waived by simply posting the problem here.

    Cheers to all of us.
