All Comments on a Single Page (Print / Archive View)

As mentioned by ccrap here, it would be a useful feature to be able to view all comments on a single page, perhaps even along the lines of the "Print / Archive View" feature on Whirlpool's forums where standard commenting features are removed in this mode and a simple text version is displayed.

Doing so makes searching for certain phrases or key words in a comment thread much easier, and in some cases it is just easier to view large comment threads rather than navigating numerous pages.

However I realise it's not a straightforward decision as there are performance and bandwidth trade-offs that must be taken into account.

Anyhow I couldn't find and similar suggestions in this forum so I've put it out there for discussion.

By the way, kudos to Scotty and the team for the hard work that goes into this site. Muchas gracias!

I'll take a look on this one.

  • As I mentioned in the comments of the thread where this started, this would help solve some of the funky pagination weirdness, like timeouts when going between pages while checking out "new" comments.

    • If archive view is introduced, it wouldn't be primarily used due to the load it would have introduced on our platform. Thus it would not be that useful for scrolling through all the new posts for a heavily updated thread.

Maybe we'll need to adjust the timeout level. Currently comments-marked-as-new expires after 5 minutes.

  • Separate to an archive view, and just generally, a site retained user-setting that would allow display on a single page of comments that which currently makes for three or four, would be nice.

Potentially, would it not also reduce the number of separate email notification entries that are maddeningly received from very active multi-page threads? Unless I'm missing something, the quantity seems to correspond in their number with updates on separate pages in those threads?

Recent, separate, notification emails from the first eBay Sunday deal and the Woolies 'cancelled order, semi-debacle' thread went silly in my inbox. I didn't want to alter my overall OzB settings, so I very nearly unsubscribed to both threads, despite still having some interest in them.

    • Do you really need to receive every email that has been updated on the thread? Go to your Subscriptions -> Threads setting and change to "Send at most one notification between my viewings of the thread" so you'll only receive one notification when a new comment gets posted, until you manage to visit the page.

      • If you think that you might interact in the back and forth of a given 'hot' thread, you'd still prefer updates when they happen. The updated thread on multiple pages + multi-email thing, is the current consequence.

  • Is it possible to view more than 20 deals at a time on the new deals page? Perhaps something like facebook where you scroll down and it detects you are at the bottom of the page and loads more automatically?

I'd like to add my +1 for this idea. It would be great to have the option to have all the comments on one page so you could easily search through them.

  • hey aarcana, thanks for posting this! Would be great to have this view available :)

  • Would an alternative be a search facility that links directly to relevant comments? Would that reduce the load on the server to load all comments?
