What's your Opinion - Divinity: Original Sin

So now that the game's been out for a while, what's the community think about Divinity: Original Sin? I lack a deep appreciation for the game but I am interested in picking it up tonight as a weekender game.

So here's bossmode's criteria for the purchase:

• Is it lengthy, and does it offer replayability?
• Does the storyline compel you to want to play more?
• Are quests of actual value, or is it just another arbitrarily grind-based RPG
• How is character progression, does it follow a level-up system or is it more like Diablo 3 (Items give the game-changing stats)

And here's where I'd like your personal opinion:

• How many hours have you played on it
• What's your build, how do you play the game?
• What do you enjoy most about Divinity: Original Sin

  • I'm curious by this game aswell and need justifcation to buy it from Steam. It sort of reminds me of Neverwinter Nights. I loved NWN.

  • Is it lengthy:
Yes, I've put in 24 hours already and I'm not even 1/3 through I don't think (although I did restart once)

    Does the storyline compel:
It's nothing special, but it's interesting enough. It's really there to hold the action together, much like most games of its kind.

Quests of actual value: There's no grinding in this game so far, I've been evenly matched to all enemies without fake scaling like Skyrim and that does. It's very well thought out, actually. So the quests themselves are fairly basic but work well.

Character progression: is good, a balance between the power of loot and the levelling of your character. I wouldn't say character customization is deep, and the level cap is pretty low, so you kinda end up going either melee, offensive magic, buff/debuff magic, or archery/rogue-ish depending on the characters.

I've played 24 hours as said above, and they've all been great fun
I have four characters in the game (you have a party of 4, not just 1 character) so I have all the bases covered. One's a tank, one's an archer, one's an attack mage, one's a support mage
I think I enjoy the pacing, and the number of times things have surprised me, which is enjoyable.
The inventory is a bit of a clutter, the best way to go at the start of the game isn't obvious so you can hit some impossible enemies early on, and walking around places (especially the central town) can be tedious at times.

    It's a good game, I'd get it.

    • This is a late reply, but I wanted to say thanks for putting in the effort to respond to my question.

I did purchase it after this comment, and here's my comments:

      • First play through lasted 2-3 hours. I had absolutely no fun with two thick meatshields (Warrior&Knight)

      • The second one I did (Rogue/Cleric) was the one I stuck with. Rogue's utility to steal Portraits of Man was amazingly addictive, and just being able to Haste down enemies with combos was satisfying to watch

      • Cleric synergy with the Warrior Madora was weird. For the party I needed a Hunter/Ranger archetype but as far as I can tell there weren't any besides Madora and Jahan to be picked up in Cyseal.

Is the game fun? Yes. But it requires a certain state of mind in order to play it. You literally have to have a set amount of time to be able to sit down and gorge upon the amount of text to fully appreciate and understand this game.

    • No fake scaling like Skyrim

I almost want to buy the game now solely based on the fact that regular bears won't vastly overpower dragons for the first 20 hours of the game.

Aside from inexplicable amounts of praise, I haven't actually heard much about this game. Just looking at the classes now, it already makes me want to do 4 playthroughs without even playing the game. Mostly because having an all magic/all rogue/all strength playthrough would be whacky and result in a hilariously bad end.

But on that note, what's the replayability value of the game? Just for trying out different builds? Like… Are loot/maps randomized?

  • I'm seriously enjoying this game. 54 hours in so far and i'm not bored with it.

    My classes are:
    1H tank
    2H DPS - Madora
    Magic DPS/healer - Jahan
    Ranger DPS/partial healer

The bottom 3 characters can all summon things as spiders make great extra tanks and soak damage. Nothing better than having a spider which is essentially immune to poison tanking something that shoots poison as its main attack. Madora summons a fire elemental that tanks fire things for me. Jahan can summon a fire or ice elemental or a spider. This is good for when I'm outnumbered.

Each melee class can heal themselves or another character for 600+ as well in emergencies.

    I'm currently level 16.

I don't think it's randomized at all like Diablo. More of a once you play it through once you've probably done and see almost everything.
