Best Amex card with Membership Rewards Ascent?

Hi
I am looking to get an Amex card with membership of their Ascent program. I want to keep the points and have the ability to convert them to FF points of the airline I want (not locked in to one or two programs). What is the best value Amex card around with max points earn and lowest fees !!!!
I already have the Citi Signature card and it will allow me to concert points to Qantas (for a fee), Velocity or Krisflyer. Would Amex be able to get me more frequent flyer points per dollar spent. For the Citi Signature card it is generally one FF point for $1 spent.

    whats the fee to convert if not opted into the $49 a year for qantas -signature card

    AFAIK no fee. 1.5 Citi points to a Krisflyer or velocity point. 2 Citi points to an Asiamiles point. Amex has more FF partners and at least for Airmiles, better exchange rate.

    I have the Amex Platinum credit card. $149 a year fee, which gives you a free return flight to limited destinations (Launceston, Hervey Bay & Adelaide are the furthest I can get from Sydney). Ascent rewards are 1 point per dollar spend, 2 points per dollar at major petrol chains, and 3 points per dollar spend at major supermarket chains. Once a year (usually March) I convert to Velocity (Virgin) points when they offer the 15% points bonus promotion.

    Just a key point, if you join the AMEX Ascent Membership rewards program, you can not convert your points to Qantas points. If you want Qantas points you need to join AMEX Qantas Direct reward program.

    Well I have the AMEX Platinum Edge Credit card and that is the case.
