Which iPad/iPad Mini should I get?

My daughter is going to a new school (we just moved from NSW to VIC) and all the students here have iPad (and iPad minis). Currently she borrows one daily from the school library but I need to get around to buying her one in the near future.

I'm a PC expert and an Android fan. I know little about iPads & minis (never owned a product baring the apple logo) - she has my old 12" touch screen windows 8.1 laptop but the school frowns upon this and highly recommends the iPad. Bah.. anyway….

She said she likes the minis more, easy to carry around etc.

I'm happy to buy refurbished or new, don't want anything too old but don't need cutting edge either.

Any advice would appreciated. Specs (memory storage) can be the lowest option available.

Kogan has listed a few ipads in the toy section on eBay so you'll be able to get them 20% off tomorrow but they are grey imports. I think the mini was around $260 after discount

  • damn missed the deal about a few weeks ago for the mini from kogan just $200!

    • I'm still waiting for them to dispatch the ipad mini.

I hated the mini. Normal is much larger, easier to read etc.
I forced myself to use a mini for a month and now I prefer it. A lot easier to carry, pack in a bag, much lighter too. Resolution is the same it's just smaller is all.
Also hurts less when you drop it on your face in bed ;)

    • I'm the opposite. I love the mini. I never touched my full size iPad once I got a mini. It felt heavy and cumbersome in comparison. So much so, I sold my full size iPad, no regrets so far and I don't miss it one iota.

      • I like it now. Took a month or so. It is a touch harder to use in bed because of the smaller bezel, often the sheets cover the bottom a bit. It's a lot lighter and does the same job, normal iPad seems huge now (not helped by the big bezel it has either)

  • Thanks guys, I just logged in and saw the kogan eBay deal too. $260 sends a good as I'm going to get in short notice. Done deal if I can get one.

I love my retina iPad Mini. The screen is large enough to read on without having to zoom into text and it's light enough to carry around the house and outside. The brightness also goes pretty low in case you're into bedtime OzBargaining without hurting your eyes :)

I hope the non retina is not too junky, for her it should be okay (yr 7 student) as I just purchased the kogan deal for $262. She said other kids use the mini but doesn't know anything about retina.

Not worth getting the retina, never get a good discount on the mini retina.

I've since looked up a few reviews (both video and text) and they put the Mini (non-retina) in fairly high regard. The biggest con is obviously the resolution but every review said it's not a deal breaker and still looks good.

If it were for me personally I'd want higher res, but that said I wouldn't be buying Apple to begin with so its apples and oranges (ha, see what I did there?!)…

Happy with the purchase now :)

It's a nice little tablet. To prevent tears, invest in a good case. To prevent lack of sleep, bad school results and obesity, don't allow her to use it in her bedroom.

    • Check and Check! :)
