Exetel -Internet and phone line down

Hi all,

I have been with Exetel since last December without any problems. Since yesterday my line is completely down (no dial tone).
I have logged a call with Exetel and was advised that if there is no fault found from exchange to distribution board (I live in a multi unit house) then I have to pay $220 and they don't even fix it.

I could imagine that somebody might have connected a new phone service in the house and the technician disconnected my service from the distribution board?

I find this ridiculous, apparently Exetel does not even have to follow the service guarantee rules.

Anybody experienced something similar or any tips?

    Hi Franconian,

The ISP is usually responsible up to the building but not to the inside of your place.
That responsibility lies with Telstra (as they own the lines), If Telstra go onsite and find that there was a line disconnected between the board and the inside of your place you may get charged for the work.

Do you only have the one point in your place for the phone line? If there are multiple ones have you checked all the points to be sure? If you have a phone try plugging it in directly to the points to test them.

You may be best to get a comms tradie out to check it out.

P.S. It is not uncommon for a tech to go rifling through the board for cables and knocking off a different service.

  • This would occur no matter who supplies your phone/Internet service.

    • Not at all. Telstra, for all their faults, takes a sensible approach to line faults, and also does not require customers to waive CSG.

      • I was actually referring to this.

if there is no fault found from exchange to distribution board (I live in a multi unit house) then I have to pay $220 and they don't even fix it.

Which is the primary reason for the OP's post.
