Damn - the sale for Osaka sale (Oct 14 - Dec 9) falls outside of the day I want to depart (Sept 9). Tokyo is cheaper so you could use the money you're saving to put towards the bullet train to Osaka cost :)
Plane (or bus, if you don't mind the journey) is definitely cheaper than the Shinkansen.
Plane: about $50
Shinkansen: $100+
(And yeah, I think it's usually cheaper to fly to Tokyo from Aus anyway, then just pay $50 to one of the cheap Japan airlines for domestic travel (Peach/Jetstar Japan)).

Same situation for Melbourne to Japan but around 16th of nov returning 17 dec but flexible with dates. Flights are about $483 return each excluding any booking fees or baggage.
