Looking for tips to get a part time job in Melbourne

Hey guys, I am curious about how to get a part time job here in Melbourne. I came from another country and have been struggling to get a part time job here. Any ideas how to land a job here?> I have tried the seek, gumtree, spotjobs, careerone and etc with no luck. Help me before I drown myself in poverty :(

  • How are your cover letters and resume's? Are your interview skills up to scratch?

Send me your cover letter and resume, I could have a look for you and see where it needs improving.
Or you can post it to Reddit /resume subreddit, http://www.reddit.com/r/resumes/
to get it critiqued by others. Make sure your resume has a pseudonym (fake name and email address) and fake numbers.

  • Depends on the job but always try to physically hand in your resume rather than applying online. What type of job are you after?

  • people born and raised here have trouble getting part time jobs here, even when qaulified.

try the websites of all the major retailers (woolworths, coles etc) - they usually have some employement positions if your luckly enough to be in the right area at the right time.

  • hey, thanks for replying! I have tried to get my resumes and cover letters criticized by some peopl and have made some improvements. I am actually thinking just to start with some wait staff jobs, I have worked in McDonalds before for 9 months, though it seems not really great for any job :/. I have tried the big big woolies, coles etc but comes out with no luck! I am definitely going to be washed away with the expenses :(

  • +1

if you are looking for part time jobs in retail and hospitality (especially in food and beverages), you're better off applying in person. Resume is just a formality these days.

BigW and Woolies recommend online application but they also accept in store application. I got one that way. Manager always asks from associates if there is anyone they know who would like to work when shortages occur.

The same with cafes and restaurants. When the shop where I work put up a vacancy on the window, in one day we'll get around 30 ish resumes. So go straight to restaurants and cafes, ask if you can speak to the manager/owner. Don't be intimidated if there is no sign of vacancy. Most of the time it is not even advertised.

Certificates such as Responsible Serving of Alcohol is a must especially if you're dealing with alcohol and knowing how to make coffee helps a lot.

Dress appropriately when you go to hand in your resume. Long sleeve business shirt ( black for cafes and white for the rest) + proper pants will do .

Remember to always ask for the managers. Leaving your resumes with others might mean your resumes ending up in the rubbish bin the minute you leave the premises.

  • thanks a lot for the info juventino! really appreciate it! will definitely go to the places with the resume! :) CHeers
