Coles Mastercard Finance Charge on PayPal Transactions

Hi all. I've been billed for finance charges in two instances already by Coles Mastercard while using Paypal (CC is linked to Paypal).

First instance is when having a punt and I used Paypal to put funds in. I called Coles MC rep and the finance charge was reversed. The rep told me that the use of CC to put funds in online punt sites will incur finance charge. BUT I USED PAYPAL! Anyway, didn't argue as they reversed the charges anyway.

But now, I used my Paypal to load my pre-paid mobile, and a finance charge is slugged again. WTF! I will call their rep line again. But has Paypal changed their terms? What's going on?

FYI, never had these finance charges with Amex.

Anyone been slugged with finance charge while using Paypal?

  • what the hell is finance charge? are you referring to cash advance fee?

    • I was going off the statement, but yes could be the cash advance fee.

  • Sounds to me like a Cash Equivalent Transaction, "Cash advance fee: 3% of the cash advance/cash equivalent transaction or $1.95 - whichever is greater. A cash advance fee will be charged to your account on each occasion you obtain a cash advance or carry out a cash equivalent transaction." Source

This seems to be pretty standard these days.

    • But I paid using Paypal, linked to the cc.

      • This has nothing to do with paypal. they are just processing the payment based on the information given to them by the merchant.

You should follow this up with the merchant.
