If you want it because you like nice coffee, definitely an aeropress. You can choose your favourite coffee and it is very easy and inexpensive.

    Cheap Coffee Machines.Much Disappoint.

    Been there done that..

But if you can't save some more money towards a better one gamgo5's suggestion is good, as you will need to get a good grinder eventually for a decent machine anyway :)

i have an Aeropress also- very quick and easy.

(some of the coffee bean mobs sell them at a good price on ozbargain)

got mine off qldmum on ebay before i saw the sales on here.

I agree with everyone above. Don't get a $100 or $200 coffee machine, you'll be disappointed and it'll be left unused. Definitely get an aeropress, you'll love it.

  • I like our breville cafe roma, which has been going strong since 2005.

  • Spend $200 (ish) on a Breville Smart Grinder Pro or get a hand grinder and get an aeropress like everyone's said above. Source some quality filter beans and you'll never look back

    Thanks guys for the response.

I was seriously considering an aeropress + food thermometer as of half an hour ago.

I just realized the main reason we(the partner) was looking for a coffee machine is because we were looking for a milk frother (and why not top up a little bit to a coffee machine).

We use a press mug currently for brewing coffee.

Do you think we should just aeropress + food thermometer + separate milk frother? (gonna be around $100 too)

Lastly, is getting a coffee grinder practical? It looks like we're heading down the fullgear direction and we are not sure if we're that hardcore about coffee for that.

  • I bought a Breville ESP4 Espresso Coffee Machine second hand off eBay for $5. Awesome little machine. A good inexpensive machine WITH great coffee does work.

Made 200+ coffees with it. Got lazy and bought pod machine.

  • I've got a fairly high end machine and grinder at home but when we got rid of the pod machine in the office I spent $240 on a second hand coffee machine and grinder and the coffee is almost as good as the home setup. The only difference is the home machine can brew and steam at the same time so making lots of coffees is easy.

The work setup is a Gaggia Classic coffee machine and an old Boema grinder (rebadged Gino Rossi RR45). The coffee machine cost me $140, picked it up from the cofeesnobs forum, previous owner had serviced it and adjusted the over pressure valve down to 9 bar from 16 bar. This machine makes a superb shot - every bit as good as the home machine.

The grinder cost $100 on gumtree - it had been used in a cafe for a few years, then sat in storage for a few years. It was pretty grubby but after a good clean it works like a charm. Replacement blades are still easy to find if needed.

I was lucky with both purchases - it was just a case of being patient and waiting for the right thing to come up.

My aeropress and kyocera hand grinder are now sitting idle..

    • My aeropress and kyocera hand grinder are now sitting idle..

On the flip side, our Sunbeam EM6910 now sits idle since we got the aeropress. It makes a comparable cup a cup of coffee, and is far quieter at 5am. lol

  • i had recently bought a $120 from HN i can gladly say it was junk never used it again
