Motorcycle insurance for young/inexperienced riders [Experience with QBE]

I thought this might be helpful for any young/unexperienced riders out there.

I was recently looking to change my motorcycle insurance provider from insuremyride. As a 19 year old P plater who has had their motorcycle licence for a year I was obviously receiving insanely high insurance quotes..
The quotes I was getting for THIRD PARTY LEGAL LIABILITY on a Honda CBR125R for postcode 30## are as follows;

Insuremyride; ~$196 with a $1600 excess
youi; ~$220 with a $625 excess
And other companies such as aami, swann and suncorp were giving me quotes between $230-$300+

UNTIL I CALLED QBE!
They gave me a quote for about $96 with a $1300 excess.
I asked how much their Third party, fire and theft insurance was and I was quoted $234 (with a $1000 excess if it gets stolen, usually $500 some factors about its location added an extra $500)..

I ended up taking the $234 for third party fire and theft because other companies were quoting me well over $600 for the same thing..

SO thats my two cents, I was surprised how much cheaper it was compared to every other company..
You do have to call them as they don't give online quotes but I found the process quite easy over the phone in comparison to other companies such as youi…

  • I had the same result when I was searching around for bike insurance.
QBE was the cheapest by far, they also had decent equipment cover included as well, luckily I have not had to claim.

  • QBE for CTP were like $120 cheaper that the rest!

For theft, Im looking at InsureMyRide for theft only (~$180 per year) with $400 excess if stolen.

Did QBE offer a theft only policy?

    • I'm not too sure I was only concerned with third party/third party fire and theft. I got a quote for comprehensive but it was like $1300 a year..

  • I was originally with insuremyride for my Kawa ZXR250 but later switched to QBE as they were much cheaper.
IIRC they don't charge extra for pay by the month whereas some other insurers do.

It got better when I got off my learners, bought a bigger bike and switched to comprehensive. They offered me a loyalty discount which for me worked out to be around $100. The fact that they didn't charge extra for pay by the month was a massive help because my insurance is now around $1100/year.

I haven't had a claim with them yet, so I just hope that they're good to deal with if/when I do claim.

  • I'm with AAMI for Third party + fire and theft on my Hyosung GT650S, still on my bike Ls, only costing me $180 a year with about an $800 excess from memory.

was thinking about switching to insuremyride actually because they are pretty affordable even for full comprehensive…which would be good for when i take my inevitable first tumble and slide.

Make sure your ALWAYS wear gloves! Don't won't someone else wiping your @55 for 3 weeks because your hands are covered in scabs. I heard that horror story once and wear gloves every single time since, including hot Qld summers!

After my first low speed slide I always wear kevlar jeans, gloves and jacket no matter how hot it is. My legs were torn up (business slacks) on my first off. Everything else didn't have a scratch.

Haha I am always ATGATT, but thank you for the reminder! I am worried about summer, although I suspect I just won't ride very much. I have a really heavy ICON leather jacket, a much lighter RST leather perforated jacket and an even lighter dririder textile jacket, but for anything over 25 degrees even being in the dririder will be an exercise in sweatsville. The kevlar jeans dont breathe much either.

Its the one thing that absolutely shits me about motorcycling - after I have put on all the gear, sometimes I wonder if I should've just taken the car. Shits me further whenever I see chumps on their stupid 50cc scooters wearing nothing but their casual clothes and an open face helmet. And taking up all the motorbike parking spots. Sigh.

My workmate who got me into motorcycling in the first place never wears any gear other than the helmet, not even gloves. I am waiting for him to have his first off and try to continue looking smug through the bandages.

        • Agreed. Everything is 'cool' when you are looking boss cruising around, then comes the pain and months of skin growth and hands are the very worst. I'm happy to sacrifice a little cred and discomfort for my own health and safety. Each to their own.

  • Thanks OP, just saved me a heap of money.

Wooo! Just FYI - I've been riding for a few years now and still nothing comes close to QBE.

Good to know! Thanks. For reference, YouI quoted me $1000+ for comprehensive with a $1000 excess. QBE quoted $380 with a $500 excess. Insane difference! QBE also covers up to $4k worth of gear as well!

      • Does QBE include roadside assist? I don't own a trailer and would hate to have a flat tyre / battery somewhere 100kms down the road with no way to get home.
