[Kickstarter] Cotton Carrier StrapShot EV1 with Rewards [CAD $59 with Shipping]

Moved to Forum: Original Link — requested by OP

Hi everyone,

I noticed that Cotton Carrier is having a Kickstarter to fund their improvements into their EV1 Strapshot. To those not familiar with Cotton Carrier, they're a Vancouver, Canada based company that make DSLR load bearing solutions (i.e the Cotton Carrier Strapshot, Cotton Carrier Chest Harness, etc).

This Kickstarter project is for improving one of their existing products (the Strapshot) to not only work with DSLRs but also with Mirrorless and large compacts.

The basic idea behind the Strapshot is to allow you to secure your camera to backpack shoulder straps instead of having the camera hang off your neck or hanging around your waist/hip. If you wanted to, the Strapshot can be adapted to your waistbelt. You can view the KS page and watch the video for how it's supposed to work.

The Cheapest price I can find for an existing model CC Strapshot in AUS is AUD$92.40 (staticice). The AUD is slightly stronger than the CAD right now so pledging CAD59.00 for a newer model Strapshot EV1 inclusive of shipping sounds like a pretty good deal to me unless I'm missing something about how buying stuff in Canada works?

If anyone was looking at getting their chest harness mounted Camera Carrier, one of the higher end rewards (CAD169 plus shipping) includes the chest carrier and the Strapshot EV1. The chest harness is currently going for AUD169.40 instore locally.

The downside to all this is that it's a kickstarter and it'd have to succeed in order to get the rewards you're pledging for.

Estimated Shipping date is November 2014.

  • So you pay now with no guarantee of a product?

    • There is no guarantee of a product, correct. Pledging to a KS project carries with it a level of risk that some may consider worthwhile.

Pretty sure KS only takes your money if the funding goal is reached.
This one doesn't look like it'll reach its funding goal. I have the regular Cotton Carrier and it's more designed for DSLRs. The plate is quite bulky for mirrorless cameras, the smaller attachment plate still looks quite big.

  • i dont think this is allowed.

    • I did speak with a mod before posting this and was allowed to use my discretion on deciding to post it up.

if this is not active, you cant post it regardless maybe post it when it is CAD 29,999

  • What's the RRP on same model which has not been invested yet?

Seems more like something for the forums? While coming from a company with existing products does add a large degree of confidence, none the less Kickstarter projects should really be seen as a form of donation with a rough promise that you will get something in return. After backing a few dozen projects, its also of my opinion that release dates are more often than not broken.

With no absolute guarantee of delivery, or whether the product will change before it ships, this doesn't really seem especially suited to posts here. I love Kickstarter personally, but I don't think listings there are post worthy.

At least if DSE or another retailer fails to have stock you are entitled to a refund. At least failure to fund doesn't cost you anything.

Thanks! I'll let it sit here for awhile more and possibly ask for it to be moved or deleted entirely.

@OP: I think most ozbargainers appreciate more the "pay nothing, get something" than the "pay something, get nothing"

      • Aye, I've been researching a bit more on previous KickStarter posts on OzB and noting the general attitude towards KS projects.

A kickstarter is not a bargain since there is no way to know if it completes and whether the makers actually pull through with what they promised.

    What an utterly stupid product.

All this proves is that Camera heads will pay crazy high prices for something that costs about $2 to manufacture. ROFL at paying $10, let alone $100 for a POS thing like this.

And why does a so-called "successful" Canadian company need crowd funding, let alone being spammed here on OZbargain?

Not a bargain - just lame advertising.

    This is advertising.

"The downside to all this is that it's a kickstarter and it'd have to succeed in order to get the rewards you're pledging for."
Wrong. Even if the project is fully funded when the campaign ends there are still risks.
The campaign creator is morally obligated to ship you your reward. This is an investment. Please keep that in mind when kickstartering.
