Mirrorless camera deals -Sony A7/R/S or Olympus OMD EM1 or similar

I am going overseas in the next couple of months and am looking to trial some new camera gear and take advantage of the TRS.

I am an enthusiast with a Nikon D600 and a number of prime lenses (Sigma 1.4 85mm and 50mm) and a Nikon 24-70. But this gear is big and my wife always complains with me carrying it around everywhere

BUT I am looking to get some smaller gear and am close to being convinced that mirrors is the way to go. I think a decent deal will send me on my way!! I know I just missed out on the Olympus cashback deal!!

I like the idea of the Sony or the Olympus and am willing to try whatever is a good deal. Obviously I will be looking for lenses as well as I am not a big fan of kit lenses.

So any thoughts out there? Any recommendations? Anyone using these bits of kit and care to comment?

  • If you're mainly shooting prime, just get a RX1/RX100? Sony/Olympus isn't substantially smaller.

Edit. Ricoh GR also is highly recommended.

    • Thanks - I was thinking of the RX100iii as a possible. The biggest problem is when I have the 24-70 on. it's a fantastic lens but it is unbelievably heavy.

      • If you want to reduce the lens size, go with a smaller sensor like the Olympus. But yeah RX100iii is pretty much what everyone hopes to achieve anyway.

        • Having tried the RX100M2 (coming from rangefinders) it's amazing how they can make it so small. Would have purchased had not been so invested already.

Since you're not travelling until next few months, wait until Photokina. Sony is expected to release a RX1 successor among others and there will be a price drop soon.

Also, before you consider a new system, look at the lens options first rather than body. :)

  • Another day and another idea - went to George's and was very taken with fuji Xt 1 with a couple of primes - any thoughts on that?

    • The primes are excellent. No experience with XT1 but I used to have Xpro1. I rec taking a look at the XE1/2 instead XT1 and spending more on lenses

Have you considered Leica T, or a used M8/9?
