Guitar strings replacement

Hi guys,

Just wanted to know how often I should replace guitar strings. I have a Gibson and Yamaha. Basically, I have not touched it in over 2.5 years, even though I have not played in that long of a period, do you think I should still replace them? I know some will say, depends on how it sounds. I rather a different answer please.

  • Replace them when they break or sound bad.
At your skill level, there is no reason to replace them.
FTR, one of my acoustic guitars has had the same strings on it for a decade. Admittedly, I only pick it up every few months for an occasional session, but if they aren't rusty and stay in tune, I say leave them.

  • I often prefer the dullened, darker sound of old strings.

  • If you have left it and not played it in two years - you should replace them. The tension on the strings has over that time been 'out' so they will have a tendency to float out of tune quicker than a new set of strings.
